2 In the Beginning there was BNA! We have been learning about British North America, but how did this evolve into the provinces we know as Canada? Read on.........

3 British North America 1866 - 67

4 Provinces Include: Province of Canada (Canada East and Canada West) Nova Scotia New Brunswick

5 Party Time! / Talking about Confederation / Charlottetown Conference. Let’s unite! Why? These guys are the DELEGATES for the Charlottetown Conference. Where they gave speeches for or against uniting the provinces.

6 1864 Looks Dark and Dreary. Great Britain declares free trade! BNA is not a very valuable trading parter.... Great Britain isn’t interested in offering military support. The United States is getting stronger..... (Uh-Oh!) Free Trade !!! Oh no! We are not ready! We are not ready! We are not strong enough. I’m watching you Canada!

7 What to do? Would each colony have more economic and political power if it took charge of it’s own affairs? OR Would the colonies do best if they all worked together? This was not an easy decision! Many were divided on the issue, This was not an easy decision! Many were divided on the issue,

8 The Maritime Colonies. Charles Tupper, the premier of Nova Scotia, and Leonard Tilley, the premier of New Brunswick thought it was a good idea. John Gray the premier of Prince Edward Island wasn’t as sure.

9 Province of Canada. The French and English colonies were fighting! Nothing was getting decided, no agreements were made. The Province of Canada owed a lot of money.... :( Uniting the provinces could help the squabbling between the French and English, and perhaps share the load of the debt.

10 NewfoundlandNewfoundland Newfoundland was not invited to the conference because everyone thought they were too far away. By the time they were invited, it was too late.

11 Charlottetown Conference. John A. Macdonald the premier of the Province of Canada stole the show! (In favour of confederation) Everyone decided that confederation would happen.

12 Quebec Conference All the colonies, even lonely Newfoundland, were present. Lasted for two weeks! By the end of this conference, the Seventy-Two Resolutions were created. These resolutions outlined how things were going to work. What is a Resolution?

13 Your task today! 1.Find out what year each province joined confederation using the information packet given. 2.Create a map of Canada, labeling each province, and the year they joined confederation. 3.Please use the “Map of Canada Marking Scheme”.
