Why in 3 rd Grade?  In third grade, the focus shifts from learning to read, to reading to learn.  Students need strong reading skills in order to learn in all other school subjects.  FCAT tests evaluate the skills your child has been learning from Kindergarten.

We have been working diligently with your students to prepare for success in 3 rd grade and the FCAT. The following slides will help you better prepare to support your student from home.

 Re-read the question.  Go back and underline – looking for answers and/or clues.  Identify key words or phrases as you read.  Compare what you find to the answer choices.  Use Process of Elimination, and if necessary, make an educated guess.  Use time wisely.  Check, check, check your work!! Test Taking Strategies

What else can you do?  Work with your child nightly (make and take activities, computer/internet programs, and make sure nightly homework is completed).  Use real world situations to enhance reading and math skills. For example, ask them to read things for you in stores, restaurants, etc..  Give positive reinforcement when the answer is correct; if they are making mistakes have them correct themselves. Ask them to explain why they are right or wrong.

 Be your child’s cheerleader.  Remind them they are ready to take the test.  Without causing stress, convey the importance of these tests.  Make sure your child gets proper rest.  Make sure they eat a great breakfast  Nutritional, and not high in sugar.  Make sure they are in school everyday and on time. What else can you do?

FCAT Testing Days  Convey the importance of taking time and being careful on the test. It’s not an Indy Car Race.  Keep stress to a minimum.  Remind them they are ready to take the test.  Make sure your child gets proper rest.  According to kidshealth.org school-age kids need 10 to 12 hours of sleep a night.  Make sure they eat a great breakfast  Nutritional, and not high in sugar.  Make sure they are on time.
