6 In a few places such as Iceland, the temperature can be sufficient at a depth of only 1km for geothermal power. Super heated steam can be produced at a range of temperatures, i.e. between 175°C and 400°C. This is the hard solid outer part of the Earth. It is made of rock and is between 6 and 70 km thick. At 2 km its temperature can be as high as 250 °C. This is a thick layer of very hot liquid rock called magma. It is about 2,900 km thick and its temperature is about 8,700 °C. 7 The initial installation costs of geothermal power stations are high, but no fuel is required and the running costs are minimal. Geothermal Power

8 Water is pumped down to the hot rocks in pipes. The high temperature causes the water to turn into steam, which comes back up to the surface to drive a generator which produces electricity. How a Geothermal Power Station Works
