1 Writing 1 and 2—March 10, 2016 Journal #4: Which story did you prefer reading more, “The Masque of the Red Death” or “The Lottery”? Why? – You may not tell me you didn’t like either story!!

2 Socratic Seminar Questions Directions: Prior to the start of the seminar, respond in writing to the following questions. All responses should be supported using detailed textual evidence from the story. You should have a solid, well-supported paragraph for each question. #1—Identify at least two examples of symbolism that Jackson uses in her story. What are the items or actions and what might their greater significance be? In other words, what might they represent? #2—Determine at least one possible theme for this story. Write to explain how the theme emerges in the story and how it is refined and shaped by specific details from the story. #3—In what ways does Jackson utilize verbal or situational irony in “The Lottery”? Describe at least two ways she uses irony and how they impact the story. #4—Based on evidence in this story, what is Jackson’s tone (attitude) towards tradition, or at least, certain traditions? #5—Be prepared to discuss how Jackson creates and builds suspense in her story. For this part of the Socratic Seminar you can use your notes from the chart.
