2 UNDP and Social Protection Vulnerabilities threaten progress in poverty reduction Supports and sustains MDG-achievement by focusing on key human development indicators (health, education, income poverty) Can be an effective instrument in promoting gender equality and women’s economic empowerment Instrument for inclusive growth and the reduction of inequality

3 UNDP and Social Protection: Areas of work Improving living conditions for marginalized populations Improving government social protection systems (including pension, social security, and insurance programs as well as non-contributory programemes and public works programmes) Improving livelihoods, productivity, and supporting income-generation Social protection as part of food security Increasing access to basic services

4 UNDP and Social Protection: Types of support for country-level activities Experience in supporting social protection initiatives at the country level Capacity assessment and strengthening Monitoring and evaluation Medium and longer term planning, including within national development strategies and across sectors Interest and demand has been growing in context of the crisis Facilitating policy and institutional dialogue with broad stakeholder participation

9 UNDP in the Social Protection Floor initiative UNDP participates as a cooperating agency. Participated in the interagency group that drafted the manual and is supporting the preparation of a communication and training strategy. Has collaborated in information gathering of country level activities Supported awareness-raising.

10 Possible complementarities between UNDP and ILO on Social Protection UNDP interested in: Human and economic development impacts of social protection Relationship with inclusive growth and inequality reduction Linkages with other policy areas and sectors (employment, for example) to potentiate development impacts (already collaborating with ILO). Social protection in post-crisis/conflict settings
