Check & Reflect Page 228, #s 1-8

Match the chemicals that are components of air with their correct %  Oxygen - 21%  Carbon Dioxide - 0.03%  Nitrogen - 78%  Argon - less than 1 %  Hydrogen - trace

Scrubbers use a chemical reaction to remove a major pollutant from the air.  What pollutant is removed? Scrubbers are designed to remove sulfur dioxide from emissions.  What are the products of the chemical reaction? The products are gypsum and carbon dioxide.

Why is carbon monoxide harmful to animals?  CO (g) is a poison that reduces the amount of oxygen that can be carried by the blood. Carbon monoxide attaches to the red blood cells in place of oxygen.  Can cause headaches, dizziness, coma, brain death and death.

Scientists have two main methods of determining the amount of pollution in the air. Explain why a) is a more accurate method than b)  A) measuring the concentration of harmful chemicals in the air.  B) estimating the amount of harmful chemicals in emissions from industrial plants and other sites.  Measuring is generally more accurate than estimating. Measuring all harmful chemicals in the air includes chemicals from all sources, not just from selected sources (industrial plants and other sites).

Ozone can be both helpful and harmful. Explain this statement.  Ozone in the upper atmosphere helps shield Earth from harmful UV rays. Ozone near the surface of Earth is a component of smog, and when combined with other chemicals, it can aggravate allergies, bronchitis, and asthma.

Look at the graph in figure 2.14. What trends do you see in the following sectors?  a) total amount (top line)- has decreased since the 70s  Alberta sulfur dioxide emissions by sector

Alberta sulfur dioxide emissions by sector  b) natural gas processing-SO 2(g) emissions from natural gas processing had decreased. 8

Alberta sulfur dioxide emissions by sector  c) oil- SO 2(g) emissions from oil sands processing have increased. 9

Alberta sulfur dioxide emissions by sector  d) electric power generation- SO 2(g) emissions from  electrical power generators has increased. 10

Look at the graph in Figure 2.14. Which process has contributed to a reduction in total sulfur dioxide emissions in Alberta since the early 1970s? Suggest a reason for this.  Natural gas processing has cut production of sulfur dioxide.  One reason would be the use of better technology to reduce SO 2(g) 11

Identify the harmful compounds in car exhausts and explain why they are harmful to the environment.  Nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide; unburned hydrocarbons.  Components of smog/acid rain; greenhouse gases. 12

Explain one benefit of catalytic converters.  Catalytic converters convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water, and nitrogen oxide into nitrogen and water. 13

Explain why catalytic converters have become an issue for people concerned about global warming.  They argue that catalytic converters increase the amount of CO 2(g) - a greenhouse gas, in the atmosphere. 14
