HEAR Explained….

What will we look at? What is the HEAR? What is ‘Section 6.1’? Evidencing employment experience – Internal work experience – External work experience – Awards Programmes - SEOTY Enhancing employability Involving employers Questions

What is the HEAR ‘Higher Education Achievement Report’ – Single comprehensive record of undergraduate students’ university achievements (primarily electronic)

Standard template, incorporating the Academic Transcript & Diploma Supplement (official version of DS) Includes additional information – Fuller academic record (course description, placement information, dissertation titles, opportunity to record component parts of modules incl. form of assessment) – Wider, non-formal achievements (prizes, non-credit-bearing modules, other verifiable activities and awards that represent learning and/or achievement) Both a formative and an exit document

What is section 6.1? Records wider learning & achievement according to protocols/mapping of activity skills onto to defined awards 1.‘Additional Awards’ (accredited performance outside the academic curriculum, e.g. extra-curricular modules/courses/training programmes or structured award/certificate programmes); 2.‘Additional Recognised Activities’ (unaccredited activities which represent achievement and/or learning); 3.‘University, Professional and Departmental Prizes’ (both academic and non-academic). Institutional thresholds set; pure participation insufficient

Evidencing the Experience Internal work experience – Specific activity protocols (On CampUS Placements, Student Interns, FreeLaw, Support Worker Service…) External work experience – Careers awards towards which external experience can contribute (Sheffield Graduate Award, Skills for Work Certificate) Employability Awards including SEOTY – National protocol to standardise and help facilitate HEAR recognition across all institutions (standard titles and descriptions; confirmation of winners proactively sent by NASES to institutional contacts)

Enhancing Employability Evolving electronic document accessible from point of entry – Supports both students and tutors in engaging with personal development planning and review – Helps staff to write references ‘HEARable’ activity promotion – Highlights importance of making the most of university – Promotes student engagement and encourages thinking and action to develop a range of experiences and achievements beyond academic programmes Embedding skills identification & reflection in 6.1 protocols A richer record that can be used to help evidence & articulate a wide range of experience – Official ‘snapshots’ before graduation as well as ‘exit’ HEAR

Involving Employers Employers not the primary audience, but… AGR HEAR toolkit outlines potential benefits for employers AGR survey suggested 42% respondents will be looking to make use of HEAR within their application processes Employers have welcomed potential business efficiencies that could arise through direct access to more verified information Employers expect to reap substantive benefits indirectly
