8 After the book is finished Say something about the story … I’m glad Little Bear found his way home!

9 After the book is finished … or ask a question about it … Would you like Jasmine for a sister? What was the most exciting bit in the story?

10 After the book is finished Then pick on one good thing the partner did and copy it. This helps the younger reader learn what good readers do.

11 After the book is finished I liked it on this page. You read ‘Floppy went to the p-ar-k… park!” That was good sounding out! Good sounding out?

12 After the book is finished Did your partner re-read to get a word right? I liked the way you read “Tommy went d…Tommy went down to the river.” You read it again to fix it. That’s what good readers do!

13 After the book is finished On this page, you read, “Little Bear seen…saw a fish! “ That was good checking! Did your partner notice a mistake and put it right?

14 After the book is finished This part sounded really good. You read it like this “Baby monkey ran away from the tiger as fast as he could.” It sounded just like talking! Did your partner read in phrases so it sounded like talking?

15 What would you say to these younger children after they had read the book?

20 In English there are both regular and irregular words. Regular words can be sounded out quite easily, when you know how! cat flat scratch mouth train hospital Irregular words can be tricky because they don’t look the same as they sound saidcome you there comb With irregular words, our brain has to take a ….photo of them to remember. Sounding out words say cheese said

21 Beginning readers often sound regular words out letter by letter. That’s fine at first but when words begin to get longer, things get more difficult. h-i-p-p-o-p-o-t-a-m-u-s!

22 Regular or irregular words? RegularIrregular their coming fan mouth your tray split hospital

23 When your child is stuck with a regular word, use a masker to help your child look at parts of words in different ways. You can split words: letter by letter c-a-t in chunks fl-at in syllables hos-pit-al

24 On page 22 in your booklet are regular words we can sound out. Where would you split them? In pairs, one person be the younger child and one be the Crew. The Crew need to use a masker and say parts of the word so the younger child can put the parts together. Have a go with the masker and say parts of the word for your child to put together.

25 You are now going to read with a younger child. Use some ideas from Awesome things to Say and Do – after the book is finished. Try using a masker to split regular words
