2 Investigative Procedures (LEO) O 24.04 – Describe crime scene investigation procedures. O 24.05 – Secure and preserve a mock crime scene. O 24.08 – Record facts about a crime using recording equipment and note-taking. O 24.16 - Describe when subpoenas should and should not be used for witnesses.

3 What are the priorities/LEO responsibilities at a crime scene? O First priority – Safety and physical well-being of officers and others (emergencies), followed by medical attention. O Second priority – Secure the scene and control, ID, and remove persons. O Attending to an individual who is obviously deceased or a weapon that does not pose immediate danger are not priorities. Focus on more immediate needs such as dispatching suspect information.

4 Why should witnesses be separated? O To avoid collusion (working together to create a story)

5 What are the types of crime scenes? O Primary – Where the crime took place O Secondary, Tertiary, etc. – Subsequent locations where evidence of the crime is located

6 What is the general processing sequence at a crime scene? O 1) Photograph O 2) Measure and sketch O 3) Search O 4) Collect evidence O 5) Be flexible and repeat as necessary

7 What is stated by Locard’s Exchange Principle? O The transfer, loss, or contamination of evidence can occur if an area is left unsecured.

8 According to Locard’s Exchange Principle, what do exchanged materials indicate? O That the two objects were in contact

9 How do you protect fragile evidence (evidence that may be lost or compromised)? O Take steps to preserve and protect it in it’s original location. O Do not move the evidence if at all possible.

10 What is the basic purpose of note taking? O To document facts

11 What are characteristics of effective notes? O They are… O Complete O Accurate O Specific O Factual O Clear O Well-organized O Legible

12 What are techniques for effective note-taking? O Only record facts, NEVER opinions O Record facts accurately O Be as specific as possible O Write legibly and clearly O Keep the pages for each case together and record the page and case numbers on each paper

13 How do you correct an error in your notes? O Cross it out with a single line and initial it

14 Are notes allowed/admissible in court? O Yes

15 When can notes be used during testimony? O Only after asking for permission to use them. O They should then only be used to refresh your memory. They should not be read from.

16 What is the purpose of a subpoena? O To order someone to appear before the court. O To obtain proof through documents, evidence, or testimony.
