3 Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in a small village called Mvezo into the Madiba clan Even though his parents were illiterate he went to a Methodist school when he was seven years old  Here he was given the Christian name Nelson Father died at age 12 He then attended Wesleyan school which had a fairly good reputation

4 School And Education  Attended Healdtown Methodist Boarding School for High School  Mandel enrolled in University of South Africa  Here he learned English, Anthropology, Politics, Native Administration and Roman Dutch Law  He was later expelled for refusing to take his seat in council  Completed a Bachelors Degree in the University College of Fort Hare  At Wits he became friends with a group of people who were all memberes of the Communist Part of South Africa  Also attended University of South Africa (1989), Healdtown Comprehensive School 1937- 1939), University of Fort Hare (1939-1940), University of London International Programmes

5  Was arrested for directing a non-violent defiance demonstration against the South African Government (Sentence Length 20 years)  1962 after 5 years in prison, decided to fight apartheid with strikes, organized a 3 day strike  Government sentenced him for life after finding out that he was using political offenses, i.e. sabotage  Was released as a result of campaigns demanding his release

6 Politics P olitical Career Nelson Mandela was a leading member of the African National Congress (ANC) He encouraged blacks to go on strikes and illegally leave South Africa-lead to him getting sentenced for 27 in Jail Mandela became a icon in fighting the apartheid Lead to president to release him in 1990 Used this stature to fight apartheid in South Africa Received Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 Was elected as the first black President of South Africa 1994-1999 1994 Presidential Elections
