Cardiovascular Disease
2
Facts on Cardiovascular Disease Many illness affecting older people start very early in life Cardiovascular disease starts at an early age Major cause of death 40%
3
Causes of Cardiovascular Disease Primary Cause- Build up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the arteries and restricts blood flow. Atheroscleroisis- a condition in which fatty deposits build up on inner walls of arteries, causing narrowing of arterial passageways Heart Attack- When the coronary artery is completely blocked Stroke-When an artery that supplies blood to the brain is blocked
4
Risk Factors 1.Inactivity 2.Obesity 3.High blood pressure 4.High levels of cholesterol 5.Stress and tension 6.Smoking 7.Sex of Individual 8.Heredity 9.Age
5
Exercise as a Prevention Aerobic activity does…. Reduces atherosclerosis Able to clear fats from their blood stream as a result of exercise Strengthens the heart Heart can pump out more blood with each pump Wont try out as quickly Less likely to die from a heart attack
6
Matching 1.___Pulse 2.___Resting Heart Rate 3.___Recovery Heart Rate 4.___Atherosclerosis 5.___Maximum Heart Rate 6.___Target Heart Rate 7.___Aerobic A.A condition in which fatty deposits build up on inner walls of arteries, causing narrowing of arterial passageways B.Heart rate just after exercise (5 or 10 minutes) C.A regular throbbing caused by pressure of blood on an artery wall that corresponds to heart beats D.Heart rate just after walking and before getting out of bed E. 50-85 percent of the maximum heart rate F. Energy producing biochemical pathways in cells that use oxygen to produce energy G.Heart rate that should bot be exceeded during exercise
