2.  First Grade Language Arts Standards › 1.W.1.1 and 1.W.2.1

3.  As first graders, we should be able to illustrate and write text to express our thoughts and ideas.

4.  We write because we want to express: › How we feel › What we are thinking › Details about a picture › What something looks like

5.  To illustrate means to draw a picture.

6.  A thought is what comes to mind when we see a picture › Example: That dog has brown spots. › Example: My favorite color in the rainbow is purple.

7.  Illustrate what you think a rainbow looks like.

9.  Now, let’s create thoughts about our picture. › Ask yourself:  What is my favorite part about this picture?  What is unique about this picture?  How could I describe this picture to someone who is blind?

10.  My favorite color in the rainbow is purple.  The sun is shining above the rainbow.  The grass is green under the rainbow.  The colors of the rainbow are not in order.

11.  As first graders, we must also be able to write complete sentences using capital letters and periods.

12.  When writing your thoughts, remember: › The first letter in every sentence is capitalized.  (Uppercased) A, B, C… › A thought sentence ends with a period. › Example: The lemon is yellow.

13.  Draw a picture that comes to mind when I say: What is your favorite animal?

15.  Now, express your thoughts by writing a sentence about your drawing. › Example: My favorite animal is a cat. › Example: My pet cat has black spots. › Example: I wish I had two cats.

16.  Find the errors in these sentences: 1. my rabbit is white with brown spots. 2. There are four people in my family 3. the boy’s hair is brown

18.  Pictures and sentences help us to communicate with others.  We can put our thoughts on paper for everyone to enjoy!
