3 Algebraic Addition Vocabulary Coefficients Operator (Plus)

4 Algebraic Addition Why? Here we did 4 + 1 = 5. Where did the one come from? What does this equal? This means we can’t add them together. We couldn’t do anything to simplify this.

5 Rearranging Terms can also be rearranged. It looks nicer writing terms in alphabetical order. But we should try not to have minus symbols at the front. If all terms are negative, it can’t be helped. Positive numbers (constant values) should appear after algebraic terms.

6 Algebraic Addition and Subtraction Example Example Try to make sure the negative term is not first. It can be in any other position.

8 Removing Brackets Example Example When there is a plus in front of brackets, nothing changes when the brackets are removed.

9 Other Unknowns Powers of unknowns and products of unknowns are dealt with in the same way as other unknowns. Example As the unknown product is exactly the same in both terms, we can subtract. Example We cannot simplify this (unless we factorise, not learned how to do this yet).
