1 Hierarchical Classification
Carl Linnaeus Kingdom Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Carnivora Family Felidae Genus Species Vocabulary to know:

2 What is it? A classification system that progresses from general to specific Using this system it is possible to classify any living thing using a hierarchical naming structure

3 How do I say dog in Japanese again?
Why should we use it? Scientific names are always in Latin because this helps to avoid the problems of translating between languages Dog has many different names depending on the language being used… …using Latin, there is only one name for a dog How do I say dog in Japanese again?

4 Who came up with this? Carl Linnaeus Linnaeus NOT Linus…Duh!!!
Linnaeus proposed a two-part naming system with names derived from Latin or Greek Similar to how we have a first and a last name Linnaeus NOT Linus…Duh!!!

5 How does it work? Classifies living organisms beginning with general and leading to specific Kingdom (General) Species (Specific)

6 Classification of the Jaguar…
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species Animalia Chordata Mammalia Carnivora Felidae Panthera onca

7 Kingdom- Animalia Kingdom- Main kingdoms-
Classifies large groups together based on shared characteristics Main kingdoms- Plants (Plantae) Animals (Animalia) Animals are made up of eukaryotic animal cells

8 Phylum- Chordata Phylum-
Group of organisms with a certain degree of similarities… Often based on morphology (body plan) Chordata = All of these animals have a spinal chord Jellyfish No Spinal Chord Butterfly No Spinal Chord

9 Class- Mammalia Class- Mammalia maintain homeostasis (warm-blooded)
Share a trait that is very identifiable… But still encompasses many organisms Mammalia maintain homeostasis (warm-blooded) Shark Not warm blooded

10 Order- Carnivora Order- Carnivora-
Chimp-anzee Not a carnivore Order- Families that share major characteristics Carnivora- All of these animals eat meat Why isn’t the shark on here then???? Kudu Not a carnivore

11 Family- Felidae Family- Felidae (feline)-
Composed of groups that share a very common trait Felidae (feline)- The strictest of the carnivores Similar body plan Wolf Not built like a cat

12 Can’t mate and produce offspring
Genus- Panthera Genus- Group of animals so closely related that they can mate and produce offspring Genus Panthera includes Lions, Leopards, Jaguars, and Tigers All of them can mate with one-another and produce offspring Always capitalized Always italicized Caracal Can’t mate and produce offspring

13 Can’t mate and produce viable offspring
Species- onca Species- Group of animals so closely related that they can produce viable offspring Viable = can also reproduce Always lowercase Always italicized Lion Can’t mate and produce viable offspring
