What you will learn How to prepare a trial balance What a trial balance is and why we need it

The trial balance The trial balance is a list of all the ledger balances that we have brought down in the nominal ledger of a business. It will list all the debit balances on the left hand side and all the credit balances on the right hand side.

DebitCredit ££ Sales2,500 Purchases1,700 Rent900 Car8,000 Cash1,900 Capital10,000 Total12,500 You will also notice that we have added up both sides and they are exactly the same. That is because in every individual transaction your debits must equal your credits. So when we combine all those individual transactions then the debits must still equal the credits.

Can you produce a trial balance for Mark? Go back and take a look at Mark in Task 10. Make sure you have balanced off each account. Take the balances and create a trial balance. When you add up both columns they should be the same figure. If they are not then there is a an error somewhere. It could be 1)Addition 2)Wrong side 3)Writing the figure incorrectly The trial balance is a brilliant way of checking for errors.

At the end of week 1 Mark’s trial balance should look like this…….. DebitCredit Cash2,140 Capital10,000 Van8,000 Fuel65 Purchases340 Sales595 Stall hire50 Totals10595
