1 Experiences of African American Parents Having a Son or Daughter with Schizophrenia BJ Kosak MSN, RN SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program Intensive Winter Institute 2013

2 The Problem Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness affecting all domains of a person’s life; less than 10% of the population make a full recovery. The disorder impacts the whole family and can be a never-ending task for parents. Families may also face isolation, stigma, and increased health problems.

3 Significance of Study Little information known about the experiences of parents in the targeted population; no published studies on needs and challenges of African American parents of a son or daughter with schizophrenia. This study will provide insight into the impact of African American parents of children with schizophrenia and the major challenges to daily living.

4 Research Purpose The purpose of the study is to describe the lived experiences of African American parents who have cared for their child with schizophrenia.

5 Research Questions Q2 “How do parents of children with schizophrenia live their daily lives?” Q3 “What is the impact of caregiving on the health of the parent?” Q1”What is it like to be the caregiver of a child with schizophrenia?” Probing Questions “What/who has been most helpful to you?” “What do you fear the most about caring for your child with schizophrenia?”

6 Specific Aims To better understand the experiences of African American parents in caring for a child with schizophrenia To increase awareness of challenges for African American parents caring for a child with schizophrenia To improve the quality of life for this underserved population

7 Sample African American parents with a son or daughter who has schizophrenia Recruitment sites: Psychiatrist’s office, National Alliance of Mentally Ill (NAMI) members, state forensic hospital

8 Inclusion Criteria Over 21 years of age Able to read and understand English To have been in the caregiving role for child with schizophrenia
