How many days are in 85,000,000,000 seconds? DO NOW DUE NOW Tuesday August 13 th, 2013

Tuesday, 9/13/13 TEKs: P.2G: Make measurements with accuracy and precision and record data using scientific notation and SI units By the end of today SWBAT: Represent very large and very small numbers using scientific notation Essential Question: How do I use scientific notation to represent very big and very small numbers? Topic: Scientific Notation

Intro to New Material Expectations:  Only talk when called upon  Raise your hand if you have a question or answer  Take notes as directed  Make class work for you!

Why do we use Scientific Notation?  Scientific notation is used in science to represent very large and very small numbers Length of swine flu virus: diameter of 10 to 300 nanometers (nanometer is equal to one billionth of a meter) 0.0000000000001m becomes 1.0 x 10 -13 m

Scientific Notation  Expresses a number as the product of a number between 1 and 10 and a power of 10  The exponent is equal to the number of places you move the decimal  Ex: 93,000,000 = 9.3 x 10 7

Numbers Larger than 1  Numbers larger than 1 are expressed with a power of 10 that is positive  602000000000000000000000 can be written as 6.02 x 10 23

Numbers smaller than 1  Numbers smaller than 1 are expressed with a power of 10 that is negative  0.0000001 cm can be written 1.0 x 10 -7 cm

Quick Checks!  What is the purpose of scientific notation?  When converting a number into scientific notation, how do you know where to put the decimal?  When converting a number into scientific notation, how do you know what to make the power of 10?  Numbers greater >1 always have a ____ exponent.  Numbers <1 always have a ____ exponent.

Put‘em Up! Expectations:  Every person participates  Hold up your answer up only when I give the signal  Focused on physics

1,500,000 1.5 x 10 6

0.00043 4.3 x 10 -4

11.234 1.1234 x 10 1

Switch it up! Convert 7.8 x 10 -5 into standard notation 0.000078

9.01 x 10 3 9,010

1.310 x 10 2 131

THE CIRCLE OF UNITS FUNDAMENTAL UNITS & DERIVED UNITS

What is a Unit?  A unit is a specific and standard way that a quantity is measured  There are two types of units  Fundamental Units  Derived Units

Fundamental Quantities/Units  Fundamental Quantity  A quantity that cannot be broken down further into any other unit of measurement

Derived Quantity/Unit  Derived Quantities  These are quantities or units that are generated from combining any combination of fundamental units

Inches  Fundamental

Joules  Derived

Meters per Second  Derived

Mole  Fundamental

What in the World??  10 minutes to work on the worksheet INDEPENDENTLY  Whatever you don’t finish is for homework  Expectations:  No talking  Raise your hand to ask ME if you have a question  Focus on PHYSICS

Exit Ticket  Work SILENTLY and hand it to me on your way out REMINDER: SCIENTIFIC NOTATION WORKSHEET DUE FOR HOMEWORK TOMMORROW, WEDNESDAY THE 14 th !
