oneone SK-11 Objective: To use skills and processes of science to define and calculate work. Core Question: Scientifically speaking, what is work? Drill: We are going to have a “Who Did the Most Work Contest”. Read your neighbor’s homework, and decide if you think that you should nominate your neighbor for doing the most work.

oneone SK-11 A special volunteer is needed to do some “work” during the discussion. There will be a secret entrant into the contest. His name is ATLAS He was condemned to bear the weight of the heavens on his shoulders for all eternity.

oneone SK-11 In your own words, define work. Read pages 108 – 110 in Motion Forces and Energy. Take notes while you read.

oneone SK-11 Work: Force exerted on an object causing it to move The force and the movement must be in the same direction.

oneone SK-11 Work = Force × Distance

oneone SK-11 APPLY: A student exerts a constant force of 20 Newtons while pulling a wagon full of canned food down the sidewalk. The student pulled the wagon for 35 meters. How much work was done on the wagon?

oneone SK-11 Work = Force × Distance Work = 20 N × 35 m Work = 700 J Note that “=“ all line up

oneone SK-11 LET’S TRY SOME a. Calculate the work performed when pulling an object with a constant force across the table. Assume that the table is 1.25m. (Use your spring scale.)

oneone SK-11 LET’S TRY SOME a. Calculate the work performed while lifting an object 0.75m into the air. (Use your spring scale.)

oneone SK-11 LET’S TRY SOME a. Calculate the work performed on a 30N bag of groceries while carrying it 50m to your car.
