1 Welcome! Junior English! 5/4/2012 WHEN YOU ENTER THE ROOM COPY YOUR AGENDA AND OBJECTIVES Agenda/ Objectives SSR Warm-up “Judy Baca’s Art for Peace” by Anne Estrada Exit note Objectives: I will... -Develop life-long reading skills. -reflect on where art exists in our own lives. -Read Judy Baca’s essay “Art for Peace” and apply her message to our own visual representation of our own stories. HW: I am still missing poems from some of you. I want to cry when I think of this!

2 Warm-up One night, in the fall, one of my classmates asked me, “So what’s your story?” I began a useless rambling of all my experiences that I felt made me who I am. I do not know why I felt the urge to tell my classmate such things because they seemed to be disconnected and not linked by anything in particular. I felt so silly, because later I went home to write, and there was my story. It filled the pages of my many journals and shined in all my art (my poetry). I am now going to ask you the same question, what is your story, and how do you make sense of it? And how can you use art in your own life to express your story? I understand that this is a huge question, but there are not always small answers in life.

3 “Judy Baca’s Art for Peace” Please take out a sheet of paper and copy the following questions. 1. Who raised Baca? What effect did her upbringing have on her life? 2. What was Baca doing for an occupation when she first started her mural project? Why did she start painting murals? 3. Baca believes: “When people are treated badly, they treat other people badly.” What do you think about this philosophy? Do you think people should understand both sides of a problem, or do you think one side of the problem is usually superior? 4. Make a short list of things you like to do and the ways you feel you express yourself by doing these things? 5. What role do you think Judy Baca believes Art can play in our lives?

4 “Judy Baca’s Art for Peace” 1)read the essay. 2)Jot down our responses to the questions. 3)We are going to tell our story by creating a mural. You can use APPROPRIATE magazine pictures, but you must represent your story through this collage / mural 4)Exit note: Explain your collage / mural and why you believe it represents your articulation of “your story.”
