4 Looking Ahead Question the data and information – where do I fit? Response Yes - Strong candidate for university – No - Candidate for university or VET Both is a good choice. When costs are considered the pattern of study below is a good one; – School - VET (Cert III/IV – Dip/Ad Dip) - Uni Yes – Strong candidate for VET (trade or traineeship), alternatively your entitlement through Smart and Skilled. – No – job or other. Am I a diligent focused academic student? Yes/No – Do I also like doing practical stuff? Yes/No I am not in the top group academically, but I would like to work in both a practical and academic setting. What option should I take VET/Uni/both? I prefer to work in a practical setting. Yes/No? STORIES

5 Sam 2015, Y12 AGCAP student at Farrer Agricultural High School. HSC studies include Agriculture and Primary Industries Cert II SBAT 2016 – 17, Cert IV traineeship at Tocal College, 6 months working in the USA in the cotton industry. Sam will also concurrently enrol in Dip/Adv Dip Agriculture. – Total incentives to employer $6500. – Cost to Sam administration fee only. 2017-18, Bachelor of Agrifood Systems, full time, credit from Tocal will account for 50% of the Degree (total HECS debt to Sam 18 months, which he will pay out of earnings). The degree is AQF 7, which means Sam could move into a Masters or PhD.

6 Nick 2006, HSC, 1 band 6 and 2 band 5’s. 2007- 2010, Apprenticeship with Leighton Holdings as a Diesel Fitter 2011-12, Field service for Bucyrus Canada Fort McMurray branch. 2013, Diesel Fitter at Multiple mine sites, own business 2014-2015, Diesel Fitter at White Haven Mine and Welding and fabrication repair jobs on drilling rigs, scrapers and other machinery, own business Assets include 4 houses, plus plant and equipment

7 VET Pathway to University Tocal College – Students entering with band 3 or above performance in Agriculture or Primary industries start at Certificate IV full-time; or part time as a traineeship (I year); Certificate III entry is available of those student not meeting these entry requirements – Diploma/Advanced Diploma which is fully online (can be commenced during Cert IV). Progression to the University of New England is outlined on the Tocal website. Diploma/Advanced Diploma which is fully online University of New England – Bachelor of Agrifood Systems, full time or part time, credit from Tocal will account for 50% of the Degree. Articulation from Tocal Agriculture College, will result in the graduate incurring a lower HECS debt than the conventional pathways but fees are paid directly as you go.Articulation from Tocal Agriculture College

8 Advanced Standing About Advanced Standing – All Australian universities must offer advanced standing for qualifications. – The Bachelor of Agrifood Systems degree at UNE provides one of the most clearly articulated pathways to move from school to university. – Students that take this pathway can greatly reduce their HECs debt.
