1 CRIME AND SAFETY SURVEY TOPLINE RESULTS MAY 2013

2 2 An online survey was commissioned by Rural Women New Zealand, New Zealand Police and Crimestoppers to understand the views on crime and safety held by New Zealanders living in rural areas The survey respondents were members of Rural Women New Zealand A survey link was hosted on the Rural New Zealand website and various communications from Rural Women advised their members of the survey and encouraged them to take part 451 people took part in the 5 minute online survey and 337 people completed all the questions The survey specifically asked about: How safe or unsafe people felt at home or in their neighbourhood, during the day or after dark What makes them feel safe or unsafe People’s views on Police responsiveness to community needs, the level of Police involvement in community activities and if there are some crimes they would not report to Police Perceptions of how much of a problem various threats or acts of violence are in their community and if they have been affected by these personally Other concerns about crime or safety people have What could be done to make people feel safer People’s awareness of the ability to report a crime to both Police and anonymously to Crimestoppers Recall of the Crimestoppers phone number The full results, including all verbatim comments are available online via client logins Various respondent demographics were also captured and can be used to segment the results. However in doing so the sample sizes may become small, therefore all segmented results should be considered indicative only. The demographics captured were gender, age, ethnicity, postcode and reasons for having come into contact with Police in the past year A bit about the Survey and the Respondents...

3 Most rural people feel safe Most rural people feel safe in their homes and in their neighbourhoods both during the day and after dark Most rural people agree that Police are responsive to their needs and involved in activities in their community Rural people well informed about reporting options Awareness of Crimestoppers is high with 70% of people are aware that they can report a crime to both Police and the anonymous Crimestoppers line, but only 10% can recall the Crimestoppers phone number and a quarter of rural people said there are crimes they wouldn't report to Police Rural experiences of violent crime Despite few people experience serious or violent crime (11%) nearly a third of rural respondents felt violence or threats to women, men or children are a problem. Likewise, 44% of respondents feel violence or threats to animals are a problem while 20% of respondents reported that they were affected by cruelty to animals. Another third or respondents don’t know if this is problem in their community. The majority (nearly 70%) felt there were no other threats or violence in their community, however the remaining 30% listed a variety of threats, the most common being theft of property or stock, random acts of aggression (e.g. from poachers or trespassers) and property damage When asked if they had any other concerns about crime and safety the three main concerns were theft of property or stock, acts of aggression from poachers, trespassers or alcohol related aggression and road related safety concerns (speeding, dangerous driving, people disregarding road rules) Rural experiences of vehicle crime Over 80% of people said speeding was a problem in their community, 75% said drink driving and 70% said theft of fuel was a problem. Just over half said vehicle theft and theft from a vehicle were problems in their communities While the majority of people have not been affected by these crimes in the last two years, a third of people have been affected by speeding, nearly 20% by theft of fuel, 13% by drink driving and 7% affected by vehicle theft 3 Key Findings...

16 16 Feel Safe, Be Safe in rural communities The survey shows that most rural people do feel safe but that they worry about crime in their communities Crime on rural roads is an important issue When people were asked for their suggestions on what can be done to make them feel safer, the most common suggestions included: increasing the Police presence in their community, improved Police operations (namely faster response times), knowing their neighbours better and better neighbourhood watch and improving or tightening of rules and regulations, particularly speed limits, road curfews and higher penalties Where to from here? (the “big so what?” question - needs discussion with wider stakeholder group before releasing any results) How can these results be used by Police, Crimestoppers and Rural Women New Zealand to help rural people to feel safer and be safer?
