2 Theodore Roosevelt’s Big Stick Diplomacy -“Walk softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.” -Roosevelt viewed expansion as masculine and ambitious. -Roosevelt Corollary- - -Roosevelt’s policy to deal with Latin America -updated the Monroe Doctrine -the U.S. will be the “police” of the Western Hemisphere -kept European nations from using force to collect debts in Central America Big Stick

3 **Roosevelt adds to the Monroe Doctrine. Roosevelt Corollary -1904 -Not only will there be no foreign powers in the Western Hemisphere but the U.S. will intervene will military power if necessary to stop it. -”Speak softly and carry a big stick.”

4 Panama Canal -bought from France in 1904 for $40 million -helped Panama gain independence from Colombia -opened in 1914 -connected Atlantic and Pacific Oceans -helped with transport of goods and navy -greatest engineering project ever

5 The Great White Fleet *Our Navy grows significantly during the Roosevelt Administration. *Roosevelt sent our Navy on a world tour.

6 Taft’s Dollar Diplomacy (1908) **Taft wanted to ensure the stability of Latin America -”Dollars for bullets” -bought friendship of Central American nations -Increased American investment and money in Central America and the Caribbean -helped plantations, mines, oil wells, railways -gave low interest loans -stopped Central American dependence of European money -often required a return to the “big stick”

7 Woodrow Wilson’s Moral Diplomacy **Wilson wanted to take a different approach to imperialism than Roosevelt and Taft. -Anti-imperialism Secretary of War- William Jennings Bryan -…Never again seek one additional foot of territory by conquest.” -promoted human rights, national integrity, opportunity -Did use Big Stick policy some when foreign nations or rebels threatened. (Mexico, Haiti, Dominican Republic)

8 “The U.S. should be the conscience of the world.” -spread democracy -promote peace -condemn colonialism (foreign gov’ts making new colonies) -refused to recognize Latin American governments that were oppressive, undemocratic, or hostile.
