3. The first university in the Hispanic world The University was founded in 1218 by Alphonse IX of León and is considered to be the oldest of existing Ibero-American Universities. It is now approaching the commemoration of its first eight centuries of scholarship. The University of Salamanca has proved an outstanding international outlook achieving true international status when the Spanish Crown founded the first Universities of the American continent. Its statutory framework inspired around 80% of the new Latin-American Universities, who looked up to the University of Salamanca as their Alma Mater.
