1 Section B comparison qns. Aim: to understand how to answer the comparative questions for section B Starter: Starter: What are the 3 assessment objectives you have to respond to? AO1 AO2 AO3 Factual detail/ knowledge Understanding/ importance Source evaluation/ interpretation

2 Section B [30 marks] Must answer one of two questions: One looking at Livy and Virgil as reliable/ unreliable. One comparing more than one King

3 ‘Big Picture questions’ The questions require you to look at more than one king in comparison. Questions will outline which kings to look at* You WILL NEED to PLAN this question. You have to look at the IMPORTANCE of each king in comparison Consider Livy/ Virgil’s reliability.

4 Example (June 2011) Handy hints to write about (essay plan!!)- possibly more useful than the other section B question. Again all 3 AO’s are worth 10 marks easier. * For this question AO1 definitely needs to be specific and detailed!!!

5 Sample Answer Read the sample answer with the mark scheme. As before- highlight the 3 different AO’s (include a key!!!) Underline any parts of it that you think are particularly good. What mark would you give it?

6 What did we think? Did the candidate do the following: AO1: AO1: Show detailed knowledge of both kings? AO2: AO2: Look at the importance of each king (good and bad) in comparison. AO3: AO3: Assess reliability of Livy?

7 Examiner Response SAMPLE V – AO1: answer contains very thorough knowledge of the key relevant events and issues with frequent and convincing reference to sources; information is detailed, thoroughly relevant, well-selected, organised and convincingly developed. Excellent structure and expression. Level 5 response for full marks AO2: answer demonstrates a sophisticated and strategic grasp of the question and is able to bring a very thorough understanding of the issues, events and sources in analytical response. High level 5 response. AO3: answer presents a very thorough attempt to analyse and evaluate the sources; there is a personal response based upon this evaluation and interpretation of the source material. A thoughtful and sophisticated development of some of the key issues. Level 5 response
