Safety Defined Safety is understanding a danger exists and modifying what you do or how you do it to limit your exposure to the danger.

Areas to look at…. Your workplace – laboratory Dressing properly Doing your share to keep the lab safe Being attentive Handling materials / supplies Being qualified

The Wood Shop – your workplace Know shop layout and work spaces around machines and benches Know where safety related items are and how to use them First Aid Kit Fire extinguishers Telephone Emergency switches Sink Other

Dressing Properly Safety glasses Apron Ear plugs Dust masks / Respirator Shoes General dress No baggy clothes or unnecessary jewelry

Doing Your Share – to keep the shop safe Know and follow rules and guidelines Give space to fellow workers Help others who ask Keep work area clean No horseplay Report problems and injuries

Being Attentive Complete required study Carefully observe demonstrations Inform your instructor of your planned actions and seek permission to use machinery Practice safe working habits

Handling Materials / Supplies Properly store all materials and supplies Safely stack lumber Move large materials with caution and assistance as needed Use materials and supplies conservatively Acquire instructor permission to use materials or supplies

Being Qualified Be confident in your understanding of what you have been taught Observe and understand demonstrations and proper processes Pass all required assessments, both written and practical Plan your work and work your plan Acquire permission for all actions Be sure all machine guards are in place and in proper working condition
