What is Matter?  An object which takes up space and have mass is called matter.  Everything in your environment is made up of matter.  A bottle water is made up of matter.  All humans are made up of matter.

The States of Matter  These are the physical forms which matter take in different environments.  Solids, liquids and gases are all made up of microscopic particles  The particles of each behaves differently. Solid Liquid Gas

Gas  Gas always take the shape and volume of a container.  In gas the particles are able to move past each other freely.  There are a lot of free space between the particles hence gas can be easily compress.  Gas are well separated with no regular arrangement.

 Gas vibrate and move freely at high speeds.

Liquid  Liquid generally takes the shape of the container which it is in.  Its particles can slide past each other, but not as fast as in gas.  In liquid there are little free space between the particles, hence why particles move slightly.  liquid are close together with no regular arrangement.  liquid can vibrate, move about, and move past each other.

Solids  Solid has its own volume and shape.  Its particles are fixed and locked onto each other.  There are little free space between the particles, hence why solid is not easily compress.  The particles of a solid does not move across each other.  Solid are tightly packed, usually in a regular pattern.  Solid vibrate (jiggle) but generally do not move from place to place.

Change of State of Matter  The change of state is a physical change from one state of matter to another.  For example when liquid change to gas or from solid to liquid.  The state of matter change when the motion of its atoms is altered by temperature or pressure.

 When you lower the temperature of water, it will freeze into solid.  When heat is apply to water, it will form steam which is a gas.  In the form of solid, liquid or gas water is still water.

Plasma  Plasma is sometimes called the fourth state of matter.  It is electrically charged, and does not keep any shape.  Plasma normally has a lot of energy.  Is found on earth when lightning strike.  The stars and sun are also made up of plasma.
