LARP Collaboration Meeting 15 Nov 1-3, 2010 Conductor Procurement and Qualification Arup K. Ghosh (BNL) bnl - fnal- lbnl - slac US LHC Accelerator Research Program

Nov 8-10, 2010CM15 @SLAC Arup Ghosh2 Outline Conductor Procurement Specifications Planned purchase Present Inventory Conductor qualification Ti-Ternary conductor Summary

Nov 8-10, 2010CM15 @SLAC Arup Ghosh3 Nb 3 Sn HQ-Strand Specification LARP-MAG-M-8002 Rev-E RRP 108/127 with increased Copper 108/127

Nov 8-10, 2010CM15 @SLAC Arup Ghosh4 Conductor Procurement In FY10 –Took delivery of 88 Kg of wire Initial spec for 54/61  Changed to 108/127 Delivered in Jan’10 –Took delivery of 67 kg of 108/127 wire Next delivery of 67 kg  Dec’10 –On order 800 kg of 108/127 wire Delivery in CY 2011 In FY 2011 –Plan to order 380 kg –Additional 200 kg (from contingency) –Delivery in CY 2012

Nov 8-10, 2010CM15 @SLAC Arup Ghosh5 Conductor Inventory Nov-01-2010 78 kg of 0.7 mm wire for 2-3 UL’s of LQ 60 kg of 54/61- 0.7 mm wire from five billets available for practice coils and cable RRP 108/127 (increased spacing) –11 kg at 0.7 mm RRP 108/127 (increased spacing) –27 kg at 0.8 mm (some in short lengths)

Nov 8-10, 2010CM15 @SLAC Arup Ghosh6 Strand Production and Cabling Plan Cable ID ending in R denotes cable made using standard 2-pass method Cable ID without R denotes cable made using 1-pass with annealed strand Cable ID ending in C denotes cable made with annealed strand with core. HQ1: 1 m HQ, HQ4 : 4 m LHQ 1 UL of HQ1 requires 18 kg, HQ4: 72 kg The cable for the latter series of HQ1 coils will likely be made with a core.

Nov 8-10, 2010CM15 @SLAC Arup Ghosh7 Conductor Qualification -1 Billets from OST HQ-cable fabrication Coil Winding & HT Ic Test @OST Cable Qualification Delivered to LARP HT Witness Sample Test Magnet Fabrication Magnet Test Billet Qualification

Nov 8-10, 2010CM15 @SLAC Arup Ghosh8 Conductor Qualification -2 Billet Qualification –Rely on OST data –Meets minimum performance specification –Low field stability current I s not measured. –Does LARP need further testing ? Cable Qualification –This is important and needs to be completed prior to coil winding. –Minimum 3 extracted strand and one round wire –HT as specified for coil reaction –HQ cables were checked during the development phase and for the first few cable runs. No formal documentation implemented.

Nov 8-10, 2010CM15 @SLAC Arup Ghosh9 Conductor Qualification -3 HT Qualification –Witness sample tests of extracted strands –Tests done at two measurement labs ? –Minimum of three extracted strand and one round wire at each site. Is this sufficient ? –1.9 K tests ?

Nov 8-10, 2010CM15 @SLAC Arup Ghosh10 Ti-Ternary RRP 108/127 There are new results from a study of Ti-doped RRP wires that indicate that Ti-doped wires are more tolerant than Ta-doped wire in tensile strain –Wire for study used CDP developed billets 54/61 (9415), 90/91 (8079), 108/127(9416) and 54/61 Nb-Ta-Ti-Sn (9362) –There are additional billets being produced by OST in FY10 under the CDP program –90 kg scheduled to be delivered in Mar’11 What should be the strategy to qualify this type of conductor for the future ?

Nov 8-10, 2010CM15 @SLAC Arup Ghosh11 Summary Present Procurement Plan –All wire will be of the RRP 108/127 type 0.7-0.8 mm –The planned purchases through FY’11will satisfy the needs of the HQ program, and initial demands of the 4m magnets –Long term plan to increase strand inventory to support LHQ magnet development Is there sufficient strand ? –Lead time for strand is now 12-15 months Note: OST has very significant ITER production work ITER work will be conclude mid-2012 However, they can handle 600-800 kg of RRP for LARP Conductor qualification plan needs to be formalized –How much QA is essential to mitigate risk ? Cable quality, HT verification of the coil –How much QA is desirable ?
