1 Focus 11/20 After China’s defeat in the Opium War, China is forced to sign the Treaty of Nanjing. This treaty forces China to open its borders to foreign merchants and allow Christian missionaries into China. The Treaty of Nanjing is the first in a series of treaties that favors Europeans over the China. Point for Discussion: Why did China lose the Opium War? Term to Know: Indemnity Critical Lens: China’s failure to industrialize led to its failure.
