History of the chandelier “The word ‘chandelier’ is instantly synonymous with class; ornate hanging lights that are just as much decoration as they are light sources. Many of these ideas haven’t changed over the course of 500 years, despite major changes in chandeliers themselves.” The first chandelier was simply a wooden cross with a spike at each end to hold a candle, even though this might not seem like much of a decoration, it was back then in the 14 th century. Outside the main use in churches and great halls, only the wealthy could afford to use and maintain them. This therefore developed into a symbol of status which only grew as the design got bigger and more extravagant – where lilting became a second emphasis after the design (function follows form). (http://hankeringforhistory.com/the-history-of-the-chandelier)http://hankeringforhistory.com/the-history-of-the-chandelier Chandeliers are widely available today from a range of prices and quality. Some designers have even gone back to the days where form follows function through the use of new technology and materials.

Examples

New technology OLED The next generation of LED lights Currently used in screens for example TV’s and mobile devices. Does not need a backlight, therefore being able to show deep dark colours and being very thin Currently being used to make flexible screen for example in the LG flex phone. OLED are not currently widely used to make lightings, they have only been used for biking lights Glowing plant project: Scientist are currently working on creating genetically modified plants that will glow in the dark. Taking genes form animals like the firefly and the jelly fish, they put them into the DNA of the plant and create a glowing plant The first prototypes for the glowing plant have been created. But more research is being done to get the plants to glow more / create more light. Light emitting smart materials: They are currently working on smart materials that will emit light when a electrical current is passed through The hope is that these smart materials will use very little energy and produce very little heat.

Plant chandeliers

Different plants I have chosen to use the bonsai tree as the plant as it can live for centauries and some varieties are evergreen.
