Aim: How do imported or foreign species disrupt ecosystems? DO NOW Interpret the meaning behind this poster!

Imported Species Species that are foreign or not native to an area, also called INVASIVE Effect: harmful to the native environment or native ecosystems, which are imported into

Import of Rabbits into Australia Before 1850’s : no rabbits in Australia 24 rabbits were released into country Rabbits were foreign and had no natural enemies in Australia Rabbits multiplied & successfully competed for food Other native animals of Australia didn’t have enough food & died  food web disruption!

Rabbits

Japanese Beetle & Gypsy Moth Accidentally imported & released into the U.S. Became pests, since they had no natural enemies Multiplied Ate & even killed native organisms of the U.S.

Zebra Mussels & Gobies Accidentally imported, by way of cargo ships, from the Black Sea into the Great Lakes of U.S. When ships arrived in the Great Lakes region, the mussels & gobies, were pumped out of ship tanks & stayed there Clogged power plant pipes Disrupted food chains by removing plankton, since mussels are filter feeders

Zebra Mussels & Gobies (continued) Pollutant concentration, from feeding, increases in mussels  any organisms eating the mussels are negatively affected Gobies disrupt food chains, since they take away food from other native fish Gobies take away places for native fish to lay eggs Gobies eat other fish eggs  creates problems for fisherman

Zebra Mussels & Gobies (continued) Gobies eat zebra mussels  now gobies contain even more pollutants, since toxins increase as we move along a food chain When larger fish eat gobies, now they contain even more pollutants

Group Activity Scenario: The Asian Long-Horned Beetle is imported into the United States, with wooden material. This beetle attacks trees in N.Y. by making holes in them and killing them. Q1: What is the name of the imported or foreign species? Q2: Which native U.S. species is attacked? Q3: Are U.S. ecosystems disrupted? Why or why not?

What are possible solutions to the harm that imported species cause? Introduce a disease causing organism that will only harm the imported species Set up traps that have a chemical scent which attracts the pests (imported species) Breed & release native species that will kill only the pest

Not Good Solutions to Imported Species Introducing another imported or foreign species to kill off the original imported species Using pesticides or poisons to kill imported species

Prevention of Imported Species Passing laws that restrict the import of fruits and vegetables from foreign countries  prevents disease & damage to native organisms

Homework Read pg. 128 in your textbook and answer the following question: Q: Introduced species threaten biodiversity. Suggest one way that biodiversity can be protected.
