10 ARTISTS ‘Quickie’ HELPSHEET POINTERS WHEN PRODUCING ARTIST RESEARCH O Who is the Artist or Designer? O Where do they live/come from (nationality)? O When were they born and maybe died? O What do they do? Sculpture, paint, design buildings or clothes? Is the Artist involved in an Art movement? Or influenced by one? What is their usual subject matter? Can you find out? What techniques do they use? Do they use thick brushstrokes or flat bright colours? Look at the work and ask yourself how do they work? O Copy their work in their style as far as possible. You may not be able to use oil paints but you could use oil pastels or acrylics and show brush strokes for example. You do this to understand their style. You could draw examples of their work – parts of buildings or sculptures. Always put the title of the artwork you are working with, the date and size if known. Write what the piece is made of too. O Why and how could you be influenced by the work/s and what are your thoughts as you look at their work. Does it remind you of anything? What struck you about the work/s? Have they inspired you in any way? e.g. Subjects used, colours, tonal variation, shapes, materials, how the work has been put together/ composed? Etc. O Look at specific works- What’s in the picture? Jot down everything you see. How are the objects/ images placed on the painting? e.g.- there is a tree at the front right of the picture which overlaps a swimming pool which is large, rectangular and going back into the distance. Does it show any of the techniques you have mentioned? Colours? Shapes? Perspective, textures, tone, lines? USE THIS INFORMATION YOU FIND INSPIRE YOUR OWN WORK- DO NOT JUST FORGET ABOUT IT- USE IT!
