Contact us at gis@uis.edu for assistance and information.http://uis.edu/ens Current poster printing rates UIS-affiliated rates: White/light-color background posters: $5.70/sq. foot Solid/dark-color background posters: $9.00/sq. foot Non-affiliated rates: White/light-color background posters: $7.00/sq. foot Solid/dark-color background posters: $10.00/sq. foot QUICK START Poster Background Avoid excessive use of colors especially for the poster background. Right click on poster->Format Background. See rates above for distinction regarding color choices Change the column Layout RIGHT-CLICK on the poster background selecting LAYOUT. The poster columns can also be customized on the Master. VIEW > MASTER. Zoom in and out Go to VIEW > ZOOM. Note text size should be roughly 36. Zoom to 100% and see the actual size. Title, Authors, and Affiliations Start designing your poster by adding the title, the authors, and the affiliated institutions. You can type or paste text into the provided boxes. The template will automatically adjust the size of your text to fit the title box. You can manually override this feature and change the size of your text. TIP: The font size of your title should be bigger than your name(s) and institution name(s). Adding Logos / Seals A common approach is to place logos on each side of the title. Logo can also be placed in an area that does not catch the eye. INSERT > PICTURES. http: // www.uis.edu/creativeservices/ standards/logos/ offers different logo options (also attached at the bottom of the side bar). Change template color theme DESIGN menu, click on COLORS, and choose the color theme of your choice. Create your own color theme. Use VIEW > SLIDE MASTER to manually change color of background. Add Text Add text to Box in the slide. Also more text boxes can be added to accommodate more information. Text size Adjust the size of your text, Remember the poster will be very large so the text will look small zoomed all the way out. Font Selection Fonts to use and avoid: Serif vs Sans Serif fonts. Sans Serif means without short lines and they are preferred for posters, particularly for small fonts. Good Examples: Arial (Helvetica), Century Gothic, Verdana, Tahoma, etc. Font (Arial) Font (Century Gothic) Font (Verdana) Font (Tahoma/Geneva) QUICK START (cont.) Change template color theme DESIGN menu, click on COLORS, and choose the color theme of your choice. Create your own color theme. Use VIEW > SLIDE MASTER to manually change color of background Add Text Add text to Box in the slide. Graphs / Charts Just as tables or images they may be added by copying and pasting into PowerPoint. VIEW > MASTER. How to remove the info bars If you are working in PowerPoint for Windows and have finished your poster, save as PDF and the bars will not be included. You can also delete them by going to VIEW > MASTER. On the Mac adjust the Page-Setup to match the Page-Setup in PowerPoint before you create a PDF. You can also delete them from the Slide Master. Save your work Save your template as a PowerPoint document. For printing, save as PowerPoint or “Print-quality” PDF. Print your poster Make sure your poster is set to the correct dimensions 36”x48. Save both a PDF and PowerPoint file format so either can be used to print. Add Tables To add a table go to the INSERT menu and click on TABLE. Select rows and columns needed. You may also copy and paste a table from Word or another PowerPoint document. Graphs / Charts Just as tables or images they may be added by copying and pasting into PowerPoint. Photographs / Graphics This is key, avoid distorting images. INSERT > PICTURES. Resize images proportionally by holding down the SHIFT key and dragging one of the corner handles. Use Lock Aspect Ratio. Image Quality Check It is a wise idea to check the quality of the image. You can Zoom in and look at your images at 100% magnification. If they look good they will print well. Remove Image Background Dependent on the version of PowerPoint in use: Format -> Picture Tools -> Remove background. Select area to keep and omit the background Change the column Layout RIGHT-CLICK on the poster background and select LAYOUT to see the column options available for this template.
