1 College of agriculture BY : HONAR S. MAHDI DEPT. OF RECREATION AND ECOTOURISM

2 When people think about air pollution, they usually think about smog, acid rain and other forms of outdoor air pollution. pollution also can exist inside homes and other buildings? Every year, the health of many people is affected by chemical substances present in the air within buildings. 2

3 What’s Indoor Air Pollution?  Indoor Air Pollution is the term used to describe the amount of contaminants in the air inside a building from sources. 3

4 ” “ Sources of Indoor Air Pollution There are many sources of indoor air pollution. Tobacco smoke, cooking, heating appliances, and vapors cause pollution inside buildings. 4

9 9 50% of all illnesses comes from polluted indoor air. (American College of Allergists). Indoor air pollutants may be up to 100 times higher than outdoor levels. (Environmental protection agency).

10 the direct result of the fungi and bacteria in the air duct systems. (Total Health & Better Health Magazine). As many as one billion people, mostly women and children, are regularly exposed to levels of indoor air pollution. (World Health organization) Humidity (30% – 50%) (Total Health & Better Health Magazine).

11 Indoor air pollution usually is a greater threat to human health than outdoor air pollution, Why?  Many people spend large portion of time indoors - as much as 80-90% of their lives. (American Lung Association).  6,000 people die per day from indoor air pollution. (EPA) For these reasons, some experts feel that more people suffer from the effects of indoor air pollution than outdoor pollution. 11

12 INDOOR AIR POLLUTION ALSO AFFECTS OUTDOOR AIR QUALITY 12

13 What Causes Indoor Air Pollution?  Air tightness of buildings  Poorly designed air conditioning  Indoor sources of pollution  Outdoor sources of pollution 13

14 How can I tell that indoor air is contaminated? Sniff the air. The nose is the best odor and gas detector, and a good particle detector as well, especially when first entering a contaminated environment. 14

15 Possible solutions The hard way, Holding Your Breath 15

16 Possible solutions  Reducing exposure to zero or safe limits  Improving building, heating, and air conditioning  Never burn charcoal indoors  Never leave a car running in a closed garage  Removing pets from homes and schools  Education programmes about prevention options  Legislation 16

17 Best Possible solution nowadays Green infrastructure

18 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS may contain chemicals, particles, and biological materials people spend more time indoors than outdoors, indoor air influenced by human activities. **recommendations tobacco smoke, any open fires including candles, building materials, furniture, pets and pests, Increase green infrastructure
