Indicator report – ASH year 10 survey Daily smoking: prevalence has trended down significantly since 1999, although between 2011 and 2012 only two of the region’s seven DHBs showed a decline. Clear trend by DHB rankings – daily, regular and never smoked.

Indicator report – breastfeeding Breastfeeding may protect baby from some childhood cancers. Breastfeeding reduces mother’s risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer and may reduce risk of ovarian cancer. 6 week target – meet by no CCN DHBs (2011) 3 month target – meet by 2 CCN DHBs (2011) 6 month target – meet by 3 CCN DHBs (2011) Lower results for Māori, better results for Pacific but small numbers.

Indicator report – HPV immunisation Data for 1999 birth cohort. For all three doses, 6/7 DHBs performed equal or better than the national average. The majority of the DHBs in the CCN region had results for Māori and Pacific girls that were equal to or better than that for the total population, across all three doses.

Indicator report – SunSmart schools SunSmart schools data is received from the Cancer Society of New Zealand, who fund the programme. Geographic data is based on Cancer Society divisions, rather than DHBs. Accredited schools plus those with applications pending – result for region (38%) similar to national result (39%).

Indicator report – breast screening As at March 2013, 5/7 DHBs were meeting the 70% target for breast screening for their total populations. 1/7 DHBs met the target for their Māori population (Wairarapa), but two other DHBs have made good progress for Māori over the past year (Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki). 5/7 DHBs met the target for their Pacific Populations.

Indicator report – cervical screening As at March 2013, 5/7 DHBs were meeting the 80% target for cervical screening. No CCN DHB met the target for their Māori population but good gains are being made by Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa. 3/7 CCN DHBs met the target for their Pacific Populations.

For both lung and bowel, Pacific Peoples had a higher percentage of patients reviewed at MDMs than all other population groups Māori had a better result than non Māori, non Pacific for bowel, results reversed for lung cancer.

Indicator report – RO and MO waiting times The health target that all patients ready for treatment received this within four weeks of decision to treat is being consistently met by all CCN DHBs, for both radiation treatment and chemotherapy. Looking ahead, as work develops around the faster cancer treatment initiative, future reports will cover indicators around this area in more detail.
