UNIT 1 Introducing characters Imagen creada para Proyecto Interbac. Creative Commons.

The Present Tenses Paco is a twenty-one-year-old student and he studies Fourth Year of World History at the University of Extremadura in Cáceres. Francisco’s parents are living in Cáceres now. His sister Sonia also lives with them. Does Paco’s whole family live in the same city? No, it doesn’t. Carlos doesn’t live in Cáceres. Indeed, he lives in Madrid and he works as an engineer. He’s living with his girlfriend, Susan, an American girl, who is doing a Master of Arts in Madrid.

Describing people Paco is 1,80 metres tall. He is the tallest member in the family. He is brown-haired and nearly skinny. He likes sports, basketball and tennis above all. He also likes cinema and pop music. He is always wearing jeans and t-shirts and he is very fond of leisure wear. Paco is a bit shy with girls. He has some female friends but their relationship is different from boys.

The Past tenses Isabel, Paco’s mother, went shopping on her own. She bought a lot of things for Paco since she thought that her son needed useful articles for his journey. But Paco only took a few necessary things for his journey around the world. He was travelling from Madrid Barajas to London Heathrow. When he arrived in London, he left his things at the hotel and went out for a walk along the streets of London. He wanted to get used to English people as soon as possible.

Word building The following prefixes added to the beginning of adjectives, adverbs and verbs, give them the opposite meaning: For example: Loyal – Disloyal Competent – Incopetent Legal - Illegal

Write a description of a person When you are writing a description essay, you are "painting a picture" with words. Good Description: Creates a main impression-an overall effect, feeling, or image -about the topic Uses concrete, specific details to support the main impression Uses details that appeal to the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch Try to make it more interesting by adding some of the following adverbs and adjectives. Adverbs: quite, really, fairly, a bit, extremely, etc Adjectives and expressions of description you have learnt in section A of vocabulary. Suggested paragraph plan: 1. Introduction: explain who this person is: name, occupation, age,..., when you first met her/him, how long you have known her/him, etc 2. Main body: describe her/his physical appearance and then her/his character 3. Conclusion: brief summary of why you like or admire this person
