2 What is Manufacturing?  Manufacturing is using Materials and Processes to make a Product.

3 General Safety Rules:  Safety Glasses must be worn at all times.

4 SAFETY FIRST  General Safety Rules:  Safety Glasses must be worn at all times.  No running or goofing around in the lab.  Do not talk to or distract the machine/tool operator.  Remove any loose jewelry.

5 General Safety Rules:  Loose clothing should be removed or tucked in.  Long hair must be pulled back and secured.  Report all injuries no matter how minor to your teacher.

6 Layout Tools Measuring Tools 1. Tape Measure measures long distances 2. Bench Rule - Usually measures 1,2,or 3 feet 2. Square Marking Tools 1. Pencil

7 Types of Squares Tri-Square Measures/Marks 90 degree angles Types of Drill Bits Twist Bit: Drills holes Counter Sink Bit: Drills a shallow angled hole to hide a screw beneath the surface.

8 Clamps Used to hold objects.  “C” Clamp  Parallel Clamp  Quick Grip Clamp  Toggle Clamp  Spring Clamp

9 Drill Press  Setup: adjust table height if necessary material must be secured to the table Operation: align bit with material slowly drill into the piece  Safety: check for loose clothing, hair, jewelry

10 Band Saw  Setup:  set guard 1/4” above your material Operation:  plan your cut  cut 1/16” on the waste side of the line  move forward and turn at the same time  Safety:  keep your fingers 3” away from the blade  remove waste materials with a push stick

11 Belt/Disc Sander  Setup: none  Operation: place material flat on the table gently push the material against the belt or disc.  Safety Requirements: Only sand on the LEFT side of the disc

12 Miter Saw Use only cross-cutting blades with a negative hook angle. Keep hands out of path of blade. Allow motor to come up to full speed before starting cut. Make sure all clamp handles are tight, even if table is positioned in a stop. Use proper size blade and type. Never apply lubricants to the blade when it is running. Replace cracked or damaged blades immediately.

13 Miter Saw Continued’ Never apply lubricants to the blade when it is running. Replace cracked or damaged blades immediately. Never reach around or behind saw blade. Make sure blade is not contacting work piece before switch is turned on. After completing cut release power switch and wait for blade to stop before returning saw to raised position. Do not remove jammed or cut-off pieces before blade has stopped. Properly support long pieces. Unplug machine before changing blade or making adjustments or repairs.
