2 Overview This collection of resources has been designed for implementation according to the Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies of the Australian Curriculum. The resources are designed to engage with the Year 3 and 4 Bands and the content descriptor is Design and Technologies Knowledge and Understanding Investigate food and fibre production and food technologies used in modern and traditional societies (ACTDEK012). Elaborations are Identifying areas in Australia and Asia where major food or fibre plants and animals are grown or bred, for example the wheat and sheep belts, areas where sugar cane or rice are grown, northern Australia's beef industry, plantation and native forest areas. Describing ideal conditions for successful plant and animal production including how climate and soils affect production and availability of foods, for example Aboriginal seasons and food availability

3 The Resource, A Teacher’s Note The resource is designed to enable students to grow an understanding of where food comes from, specifically from paddock to plate. In Australia we are lucky enough to grow a range of different foods, fibres and also farm animals. Students will investigate specific food types which are grown in regions of Australia. They will use websites, activities and quizzes to check their knowledge and understanding. The students will also investigate Indigenous links to food and how the seasons effect the availability of food and food types. A printable unit plan is available for your use.

In Australia we grow a variety of different foods, grains, and we also farm animals for food. Knowing where your food comes from is important. We can’t always get more from the store, it isn’t that simple. Food must be grown and harvested for us to buy and enjoy. So grab your boots, its time to get down and dirty.

5 Beef Cattle Information Cattle are farmed for a number of agricultural products including meat and dairy products. There are well over 1 billion cattle in the world and meat from adult cattle is known as beef. Cattle are herbivores that eat grass and vegetation. 6 Where do we farm our Beef in Australia In Australia we farm cattle all over the great brown land we call home. The blue shows the area of Australia where the cattle is mostly farmed. Using your day pad, answer the following question using the map provided. Why do we graze beef cattle mostly along the coastlines of Australia?
