2 Annexation 1836 – Texas wants to be annexed but Unites States is not interested. – Mexico may start a war. – It would increase the number of slave states. – Texas debt Lamar takes over as President and is not interested in annexation.

3 Annexation April 1844 – Treaty of Annexation – United States Senate votes it down. But, the United States is interested in territorial expansion and Manifest Destiny

4 Annexation Manifest Destiny – It is the destiny of the Unites States to settle North America from coast to coast. Settlers want the fertile land of Texas and Oregon.

5 Annexation 1844 Presidential Election – Henry Clay vs. Andrew Polk. – No annexation vs. Manifest Destiny Polk Wins

6 Annexation Concerns of Other Countries – Mexico concerned about expansion west of Texas into Mexican territory. – England concerned about growing power of the United States. – Texas becomes 28 th state in United States in 1845.

7 U.S.-Mexican War Southern Border disputed between Texas/US and Mexico. – Texas/US claims Rio Grande River – Mexico claims Nueces River – Are in between is disputed and called the “Nueces Strip.” Reparations during Texas Revolution

8 U.S.-Mexican War President Polk sends secret envoy to Mexico to negotiate purchase of disputed territory plus other land. Mexican president refuses to meet. Polk sends in Zachary Taylor across the Nueces River. – Mexico views it as an invasion and attacks some of the soldiers.

9 U.S.-Mexican War President Polk claims: “American blood spilled on America soil” War is Declared by Congress. After many skirmishes, Santa Anna is defeated by Zachary Taylor at Buena Vista. Last major battle - Chapultepec

10 U.S.-Mexican War American troops march into an abandoned Mexico City to arrange a treaty. Mexican Government has left for Guadalupe Hidalgo. US troops and Mexican Government negotiate the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

11 Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo Rio Grande River Border Mexican Cession United States pays Mexico $15 Million for territory. All Mexican citizens living in new territory have a year to decide if they want to be US citizens.

13 Compromise of 1850 Mexican Cession caused some political issues with all the new land. – Slavery states vs. Slave states Texas is a slave state What about other territories? – New Mexico border

15 Compromise of 1850 Congress drafts the Compromise of 1850 – California admitted as a free state – Voters in the rest of the Mexican Cession decide as individual territories. – Texas gives up claims to New Mexico and receives $10 million to pay off debt.
