Objective

 Does the first sentence grab readers’ attention?  Does the first paragraph provide a general overview of the essay’s topic?  Does the first paragraph include a thesis statement that strongly and clearly states your point of view?  Does the thesis clue readers in as to what the essay is going to be about?

 Do they contain a total of at least three points that support the thesis?  Do they provide details to further explain each of the supporting points?  Are the supporting points presented in order from weakest to strongest?  Do you acknowledge an opposing point of view and then explain why you think it isn’t strong enough to change your point of view?

 Does the last paragraph remind readers of the main points of the essay, without going into too much detail and repeating everything readers just read?  Is the conclusion free of new information (such as another supporting point)?  Does the last sentence leave readers with a strong final impression?

 Does one idea flow smoothly into the next?  Do the sentence structures and lengths vary?  Does every sentence relate to the thesis? 3  Does everything make sense?  Is the essay convincing?  Are the grammar, punctuation, and spelling correct?

Introduction paragraph Michael Jordan is known for his abilities on the basketball court. In the 90’s, Jordan helped the Chicago Bulls win 7 NBA titles. After retiring in 1997, he found even more success as a coach in the NBA. Some sports fans are determined to believe Michael had and easy life because he was so talented. However, Michael Jordan’s success didn’t come easy. There were many obstacles he had to overcome to get where he is today. I believe Michael Jordan is a striking example of determination and perseverance because he was cut from his high school varsity team, told he was not good enough to play college basketball, and overcame his father’s murder. Body #1 Jordan grew up loving basketball, but talent didn’t come naturally to him. In fact, during his junior year of high school, he was cut from the varsity team. Jordan was devastated, but made the choice to work even harder to reach his goal. He was able to improve his game to make varsity his senior year. However, he would be told that his efforts weren’t enough to get him to the next level. Body #2 Jordan dreamed of playing professional basketball, but first had to make it to the college level. After trying out for Duke University, Jordan was told by the coaching staff “You’re good, but you’re not good enough to play at the college level.” Jordan refused to give up. Instead, he practiced more. His hard work paid off when he attended a tryout at North Carolina University. The coaches not only thought he was good enough to play college basketball, but that he was good enough to be their starting guard in his first year. Body # 3 Many fans of basketball believe Michael Jordan was given special privileges because of his ability to play basketball. The author states, “Jordan was mad captain of the team because the coach did not want him to transfer to another team.” I believe he was chosen because of his talent and abilities. Michael Jordan was phenomenal on the court and proved it every time he played a game. Give him the credit he deserves for working hard regardless of any obstacles that came his way. Conclusion Michael Jordan believed that hard work and determination would someday pay off for him. Many people think that Michael Jordan was born great, and that he didn’t have to work hard. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school varsity team, told he was not good enough to play college basketball, and overcame his father’s murder. I believe that for these three reasons, he is an example of what perseverance and determination can achieve.
