1 Lesson 5: Maps How do you create an AWESOME map?

2 Brainstorming: Brainstorm with your neighbor… REVIEW: What are the 3 kinds of maps?? What 5 important things should a map include??

3 Goal for Today: By the end of class today you will: Be able to draw a map that includes the 5 important parts of a map Know techniques to create an informative and easy to understand map and include those in a drawing

4 Look at your notes: The most important parts of any map are… 1.Title 2.Compass rose 3.Scale 4.Legend 5.Locator map/grid (latitude or longitude) Let’s share our notes…show yours to Ms. Clarke!

5 Exchange maps Look at the map of another group. Think about the following and write down constructive feedback for the other group: 1.Are the 5 important parts of a map included? 2.Is the map easy to understand? Why or why not? 3.What things did the group include that were helpful? 4.Was anything included that wasn’t helpful?

6 How to draw an AWESOME map: 1. Add physical features like mountains, rivers and/or lakes Use blue to show water (don’t use blue for anything else!!) Use contour lines to show elevation Contour lines are circles with numbers that show how high the hill or mountain is at a certain point, ending with a small circle showing the top

7 How to draw an AWESOME map: 2. Give LOTS of information in your legend Use color or small diagrams in your legend The picture/color should help the reader understand what the thing is in real life

8 How to draw an AWESOME map: 3. Use labels Write neat labels to indicate the names of things. Use a legend if you include many of the same feature (i.e. cities) Sometimes you need to combine a legend and label i.e. the name of a city.

9 How to draw an AWESOME map: 4. Write NEATLY Take your time and write neatly so your information is easily understood Draw clean lines (no smudges) and color within lines so people can see edges. Take time to plan your map before you start…make sure you have enough space for your title, scale, compass rose, legend etc.

11 Activity 1: Edit or re-draw your map You have 10 minutes to edit your map. Look at the feedback from the group that reviewed your map Think about what we just talked about (list below) Hand your map into the basket when you are finished Include the 5 important parts Add physical features like mountains, rivers and/or lakes (NOT ON THIS MAP ) Give LOTS of information in your legend Use labels (alone or with a legend) Write NEATLY

12 WORK TIME! You can be: Do your work in this order… Finishing any homework you have for social studies (assignments 1-4) Working on your geography review glossary Working on your unit 1 glossary Doing extra practice for latitude/longitude (see Moodle) Review vocabulary, PPTs…make sure you understand what is going on OR help another student
