1 Do you know the difference between the four types of questions?

2  Are the easiest type of question. The answer is in one spot. It is almost directly stated and it does not require much brain power. You should be able to point to one spot in the text to answer your question.  Some Right There Stem Starters:  The narrator says_________:  The passage mentions: _______:  According to the passage, what_____:  According to the passage, why______:  The passage indicates ________:  According to the passage, where _____:  The passage states ________:

3  Deal with vocabulary words  Focus on how the word is used in the text  Rely on context clues from the text  Look at the sentence before, in, and after the unknown vocabulary word to understand the meaning.  Some Vocabulary Stem Starters:  As used in lines 35-36 the word _____ means:  As used in the passage, the phrase “____” line 21 most nearly means:  In the context of the passage (line 49) the word _______ most nearly means:  Which word is the closest synonym to _____?  Which word is the antonym to ______?

4  Answer is in the text, but the words used in the question and those used for an answer may not be in the same sentence and will typically NOT be worded alike.  Maybe referenced throughout several pages or paragraphs  Found in multiple places in the article  Text Structure- compare/contrast, cause/effect, sequence of events, and MAIN IDEAS

5  The article mostly talks about:  The main idea for the article is:  The central point of this passage is:  What could be a different title for this passage?  What would be the best alternative title for this article?  Based on the second paragraph why is ________ important for ____________?  What cause and effect relationship is described in this article?

6  You need to use your prior knowledge and think like the author  Requires the reader to connect with the author and look beyond the text  The reader needs to make inferences predictions- Higher Level Thinking needs to take place!

14  Which two words from the reading are the closest synonyms?  Answer- Vocabulary. It is dealing with vocabulary.

15  What resulted from ____________________ ?  Answer- Think and Search because it deals with text Structure- Cause and Effect

16  The reader can predict that______________:  Answer- Author and Me. When dealing with predictions you have to infer based off of text- based evidence of what will happen next.

17  In the context of the passage the word gape most nearly means?  Answer- Vocabulary. Dealing with definitions, synonyms, or antonyms it will always be vocabulary.

18  Which would not be important to include in the summary?  Think and Search- Summaries only include main ideas. This question is asking what is not a main idea.

19  According to the article, the reader can infer that_______________?  Answer- Anytime dealing with inferences it is an Author and Me question. These questions are never directly stated in the text.
