2 In the beginning "The Globe" was first known as 'The Theatre' Built in Shoreditch, London in 1576 Owned by James Burbage Land was owned by Glies Allen

3 History The Globe was one of four major theaters (bardweb) The Swan (1594) The Rose (1587) The Hope (1613) The Globe was built by Peter Smith and his workers in 1599 It was built with an open arena, it had a capacity of 1500+ and was a polygonal figure It brought in the money and almost ran other theaters out of business. Days of plays were like festivals

4 Advertising A flag for each play: red-history white-comedy black- tragedy The crest- Hercules carring the globe on his back The motto- "Totus mundus agit histrionem" (the whole world is a playhouse)

5 Cost of the play: 1 penny got you a spot to stand in the "pit" 2 pennies would allow you to sit in the first galleries 3 pennies would allow you to sit in the second gallery Men and Women attended the play, most noble women wore masks to hide their identity

6 FIRE! June 29, 1613 the Globe was putting on a production of Henery VIII A cannon used for special effects was packed with wadding and when it went off wind caught it and caught the thatch roof on fire. The whole theatre burned down No one was killed and no major injuries were reported.

7 Globe 2 Rebuilt in 1614 Opened the summer of 1614 The new Golbe had a tile roof instead of straw

8 Death of the Globe 1642 the Puritans banned all stage plays 1642 the English Civil War broke out 1644 the Globe was demolished by the Puritans

9 The Globe Today Sam Wanamaker visited London for the first time in 1949 He worked with the artitcet Theo Crosby Wanamaker created the Shakespeare Globe Trust dedicated to reconstructing the theatre The reconstruction was finished in 1997 Neither Wanamaker or Crosby saw the finished product. Wananmaker died in 1993 and Crosby died in 1994 It is as close to the original as possible, although no one knows for sure what it looked like.
