1 NOAA Council on Long-Term Climate Monitoring (CLTCM) Presentation to NOAA Science Advisory Board November 5 – 7, 2002 Chair: Tom Karl Executive Secretary: Chris Miller Reporter: Bill Murray 1

2 The NOAA Council on Long-Term Climate Monitoring (CLTCM) Terms of Reference Purpose of the CLTCM:  Evaluate and prioritize requirements for existing and planned climate-related observing systems including data processing and data management related to trends and variability  Consider practices/systems that span the range of atmospheric, oceanographic, terrestrial, and cryospheric variables, with attention to issues of accuracy, biases, and errors: - forcings (solar, GHGs, aerosols...) - feedbacks (sea ice, land cover, snow cover, water vapor, clouds…) - responses (atmospheric temperature, precipitation, ecosystems…)  Report findings to NOAA management, i.e., provide advice and recommendations for remedial action and initiatives 2

3 CLTCM Membership  Reconstructed during Summer/Fall 2002  Membership Invitation Acceptances Received (As of October 10, 2002) Tom Karl (Chair), NOAA National Climatic Data Center Mark Abbott, Oregon State University Antonio J. Busalacchi, University of Maryland Judith Curry, Georgia Institute of Technology Rainer Dombrowsky, NOAA National Weather Service Michael Johnson, NOAA Office of Global Programs Martha Maiden, NASA Headquarters Rick Rosen, Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. William Rossow, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies Stan Schneider, NPOESS Integrated Program Office Dian J. Seidel, NOAA Air Resources Laboratory Soroosh Sorooshian, University of Arizona Kevin Trenberth, National Center for Atmospheric Research Ferris Webster, University of Delaware College of Marine Studies  Awaiting response (as of October 10, 2002) from three additional invitees Charles KennelJudith Lean Michael Praether 3
