1 Workshops for Summer 2015 Lock Lane, Sandling, Maidstone, Kent, ME14 3AU 01622 621246 cgeddes@kentlife.org.uk/k Arts and Crafts Activity Pupils per group Description Rag Rug Making15-30 Children will learn about the history and importance of rag rug making in Victorian and WWII times, then make their own piece to take home. From Sheep to Sock Up to 30 Children will learn about the journey from sheep to woolen yarn. They will discuss the rearing of sheep and the process of making sheep’s wool into yarn. Children will learn to braid or finger knit and make a bracelet to take home. Pottery KS1Up to 30 Enter the magical world of the mini-beast and discover what the world would look like if you were only 2 cm tall! Then, let your imagination run wild as you create your very own mini-beast from clay. Pottery KS2Up to 30 Discover the science behind the amazing transformation that turns 'mud' into stone. Then make your very own coil pot, using the same methods as the Romans! Activity Pupils per group Description Soup’s On!20-30 As a class, children make a pot of seasonal vegetable soup using herbs and vegetables from Kent Life’s gardens. In a visit to the gardens, they explore how some of the vegetables used that day are grown. Each child gets to take home a cup of their own soup. Double session. Activity Pupils per group Description Meet the Animals10-20 This activity takes place in the Farmyard at Kent Life. Children are introduced to a number of the animals and hands on experiences are encouraged. The Kitchen Garden 10-20 This activity takes place in the Kitchen Garden at Kent Life. Children are shown a variety of different seasonal fruit and vegetables, given an explanation of how they are grown and have an opportunity to explore the herb garden. From Grain to Bread 10-30 In this workshop children will learn about cereals, how they grow, the history of the Granary, how bread is made and then they will make and bake a bread roll to take home. Hopping Down in Kent Up to 30 Children will meet a Hopper down from London on a working holiday. They will explore original Hoppers huts and artefacts, learn about a Hoppers life as well as discovering the process of growing and harvesting this traditional Kentish product in a unique, interactive way. Meet the Beekeeper 20-30 This demonstration allows the children to learn about bees, the construction of their hives and the process of making honey. An observation hive allows the children to see the bees up close in safety. Mini Beasts10-20 Whilst touring the site, pupils discover how there is always life beneath their feet and also learn first-hand the operational jobs of the tiniest mini beasts and their role in the cycle of life. Children will find out where they live, what they eat and how they hunt and search for food. From Field To Fork 15-30 Pupils learn how the food we eat is grown. In a tour round the gardens and animals we explore the origins of our dinner. Do pupils know how cauliflower grows? Where sausages come from? This year-round workshop is truly seasonal. Food & Farming New for 2015!

2 Activity Pupils per group Description Homes in the Past10-20 Travel back into the past and visit our historic houses to discover the differences between homes past and present. This one hour workshop will include tours of our period homes, including Victorian, WWII and 1950's in the company of a historical character Victorian A selection: Victorian Schoolroom Up to 30 Children are armed with slates and chalk and given a lesson Victorian style in our Victorian schoolroom. They will find out about the old methods of teaching and discipline! Florence Nightingale Up to 30 A wonderful opportunity to meet the “Lady of the Lamp”. Pupils will learn about her life and work as well as discovering the world of Victorian medicine. Tudor A selection: Tudor Barber Surgeon Up to 30 Meet the doctors of the Tudor era. Discover how herbs, leeches and frogs were used to 'cure' the sick. Crime and Punishment Up to 30 Tudor justice. Was everyone treated the same? What exactly are stocks? What did they use balls and chains for? World War II A selection: Evacuee Experience Up to 30 In this hands-on, interactive session children will experience what it was like for city children to be evacuated to the countryside. Air Raid WardenUp to 30 Does your class know what to do when the Air Raid siren goes off? In this hands-on, interactive session children will find out what it was like to live through an air raid. Roman A selection: Roman CenturionUp to 30 Children learn how the Roman Army was structured and find out if they meet the requirements to become a centurion. Meet BoudiccaUp to 30 Children have an audience with Queen Boudicca! She tells the story of her life and how and why she is held captive. VikingA selection : Alfred the Great at Sea Up to 30 Meet Alfred the Great and explore why did the Vikings took to the seas and made such far journeys.
