Math Learning Night 3rd Grade

What is the new Common Core? EnglishSpanish

Tonight’s Objectives ●Help parents understand the differences the Common Cores State Standards bring into our classroom ●Help parents understand what this shift means to our kids and how to “Practice Math” now ●Help parents see how math is being connected to real life problems ●Give parents resources to take home and use ●Review some multiplication strategies ●Questions/Comments, Suggestions for Next Time

Building on skills within AND across grade levels STUDENTS MUST: -Keep building on their learning year after year -Recognize that new concepts they are learning are not a new event -It is just an extension of math they learned in previous lessons or grades PARENTS CAN: -Be aware of what your child struggled with last year and how that will affect ongoing learning -Build a plan with your teacher to support your child in their “gap” skills

Developing a Rigorous Speed and Accurate Fluency STUDENTS MUST: -Spend time practicing by doing problems that give them practice with procedural fluency PARENTS CAN: -Know all of the fluencies your child should have -Prioritize learning of the ones they still find difficult -Push your child to know, understand and memorize basic math facts

Key concepts to be fluent in - by grade level.

How do we practice math under the new Common Core?

STUDENTS WILL: -Solve problems without giving up -Think about numbers in many ways -Explain their thinking and try to understand others through math talk PARENTS CAN: -Notice whether your child really knows why the answer is what it is -Ask questions: “How did you know?” “How does this make sense?” “Is there another way to show me?” “Why does your strategy work best?

STUDENTS MUST: -I can show my work in many ways -I can use math tools and tell why I chose them -I can work carefully and check my work PARENTS CAN: -Check your child’s math work WITH them -Ask them “Does this make sense?” -Ask what strategies they can use to backwards check their answer (subtraction for addition, multiplication for division, a different strategy, etc.)

STUDENTS MUST: -Apply math in real world situations -See math in other subjects like science -Know which math skills to use for which situation PARENTS CAN: -Ask your child to do the math that comes up in your daily life -Help your child recognize opportunities to use math in their daily life

Math in Real Life Problems -Read, Draw, Write strategy -READ it carefully and decide what they are asking -DRAW an illustration to show you’re thinking -WRITE a statement that answers the question

Let’s Try One Together Billy has 18 pieces of candy that he’d like to share. He has 2 friends who are coming over to his house today. He will share them equally with his friends. However, Billy wants a fair share too. How many pieces will each of the children receive?
