2 Background This novel is about life for an African-American family, the Logans, in Depression-era Mississippi. The Logans are fortunate; they own their own land in a time and place when many—black and white—are living as sharecroppers* on various plantations. However, they are also living in a time and place when racially- motivated crimes are common. *Sharecropper- a farmer who lives on the landlord’s land and gives a portion of crops as rent

3 Cassie, the young narrator, and her siblings experience racism daily. One early example is described in the first chapter, when the reader learns about segregated* schools in the 1930s. What is segregation?
