4 Crime and Terrorism Columbine High School (1999) - 2 students killed 12 students and 1 teacher, then shot themselves - Effect: copycat crimes all over the U.S. World Trade Center Bombings (1993) – First attempt to bring down the WTC towers in New York

5 Crime and Terrorism September 11, 2001 (George W. Bush) - 2 hijacked planes struck WTC towers - 3,000 deaths - attacked by Al-Qaeda - Osama Bin Laden (Most Wanted) VERY IMPORTANT PRODUCTS FROM 9/11 ATTACKS (1) Department of Homeland Security (2) Patriot Act (2001)

8 World Trade Organization (WTO) Purpose: 1999 –promotes trade and economic development and resolves disputes Creates international rules for trade and solves trade problems / issues Criticism: made large decisions without public opinion which harmed  Poor countries  The environment  American manufacturing

9 Republicans take control of Congress Newt Gingrich (Speaker of the House in 1990s) - HATED CLINTON!!!! - Contract with America – items that Republicans “promised” to enact if they won control of Congress (tax cuts, tougher crime laws, limited congressional term limits) - IT worked – Republican took both houses of Congress in 1994 election

Perot Clinton WINS reelection __________________________________ Clinton’s Impeachment - Perjury (Monica Lewinsky) and obstruction of justice (misuse of federal money in Arkansas) / faced a trial in the Senate – Senate fell short of the majority vote to remove him from office

12 2000 election confusion FLORIDA – Whoever wins this state gets the 270 votes needed for the presidency Too close – need a recount Gore – demanded recounts (in mostly Democratic counties) while Bush claimed it would lead to political mischief Outcome: Republicans SUED to stop the manual recounts – went to the Supreme Court – 5 to 4 vote to stop recounts (lacked uniform standards and violated equal protection for voters So………..

16 High Tech Industries Bill Gates – entrepreneur that founded the “MICROSOFT” company ($60 billion) NASDAQ – an electronic “stock index” (buy and sell stock electronically) Dotcoms – businesses on the world wide web (.com) Internet - lead to the idea of “telecommute” – work out of homes instead of going to the office everyday!
