PERTON MIDDLE SCHOOL ASSESSMENT EVENING 02/12/15

Assessment is the process of judging or measuring knowledge, skills and understanding. To provide information to parents on students’ acquisition of knowledge, skills and understanding during lessons (daily); units of work (half termly) and at key transition points (yearly or at the end of a key stage). OBJECTIVE

The education system lost sight of the need for a genuine conversation between parents and schools: to help parents support their children on this part of reading, or that part of maths; not focus on a blanket judgment that ‘your child is level 3, and that’s fine for a child of their age.’ What the Government said School reform minister Nick Gibb February 2015

PERTON MIDDLE SCHOOL In Key Stages 2 and 3 each statement from the national curriculum are assessed using the following grade set: Mastered (*) Working above the expected standard for pupils at this point in their education Secure ( ) Working at the expected standard or the area of learning has been mastered Developing ( /  ) Working just below the expected standard or the area of learning has been partially mastered Emerging (  ) Working below the expected standard or the area of learning has not been mastered Blank ( ) Not assessed

EmergingAttempts to perform a basic serve with limited success Attempts to return the serve DevelopingCan perform a basic serve from behind the table with some success Can return a serve with some success SecureCan perform a legal serve with success power and accuracy Can perform a rally of at least 6 shots MasteryCan perform a legal serve with accuracy, power and consistency Can perform a fast paced rally of at least 8 shots

PERTON MIDDLE SCHOOL The teacher then arrives at an overall judgement for each student in their subject, which they report to parents towards the end of each term: Mastered (Purple) Working above the expected standard, which means the student has mastered the vast majority (>80%) of the elements of the National Curriculum up to this point including all the key elements. Secure (Green) Working at the expected standard, which means the student has mastered the majority (≥60%) of the elements of the National Curriculum up to this point including all the key elements. Developing (Amber) Working below the expected standard, which means the student has not mastered the majority (<60%) of the elements of the National Curriculum up to this point or they are not secure in all of the key elements. Emerging (Red) Working well below the expected standard, which means the student has mastered few (<30%) elements of the National Curriculum up to this point or is only secure in a few (<50%) of the key elements.

Assessment in Lessons Pitching the learning to challenge your children

Aim To share with parents a taster of what now happens in lessons

What has changed in lessons? Teachers have higher expectations of the pupils – we have all raised our game! Learning may seem harder than older siblings may have had before, particularly in English, maths and science. A new language WALT, WILF… Pupils work will be assessed against age related expectations (secure) with new language… Mastery, Secure Developing, Emerging…

Some examples… We will look at… Mathematics English Science Art

Mathematics Everybody’s favourite!! Year 5 maths - Autumn term Year 6 ‘Perton Challenge’

Year 6 Perton Pair Challenge Can you spot the mistakes that these pupils have made?

WALT We are learning to subtract numbers (with one and two decimal places) using the column method. (Year 5 Term 1) WILF What I’m looking for: You can use column subtraction to answer questions which involve numbers with one integer and one decimal place. e.g. 6.8 – 2.9Developing You can use column subtraction for questions involving a mixture of one and two decimal places. e.g. 12.4 – 2.83Secure You can solve problems and puzzles, including missing number questions. You can identify common misconceptions and support other people. Secure/mastery

Try the following questions: 1) 9.8 – 6.2 2) 8.7 – 2.8 1) 6.7 – 5.23 2) 12.4 – 3.15 Try the following questions: Anna is 1.53 metres tall, her dad is 1.9 metres tall. How much taller is her dad? Start with 5.5 and subtract 1.78. How many times can you do this before you go below zero ? Complete the following subtraction: 1_._ - _.35 = 3.45

I can apply my knowledge of chemical reactions to write word/ formulae equations for an experiment. I can identify and explain the difference between a chemical reaction and physical change. I can identify a chemical reaction and physical change from an experiment. WALT: use experimental evidence to determine if a chemical reaction has taken place. Mastery Secure Developing

I can identify and explain the difference between a chemical reaction and physical change. I can identify a chemical reaction and physical change from an experiment. I can decide if a change cannot be reversed (chemical reaction) WALT: use experimental evidence to determine if a chemical reaction has taken place. Secure Developing Emerging
