1 ANIMAL RIGHTS STARTER: 60 SECOND CHALLENGE – WRITE DOWN ALL THE TERMS YOU CAN THINK OF TO DO WITH THE TOPIC

2 LEARNING INTENTIONS…  Explore the extent to which animals are different from humans and whether they are less important and understand religious ideas about the place of animals in the world  Explore the concept of ‘animal rights’ and understand some religious views on how the rights of animals should be protected

3 WRITE THE QUESTION: ARE HUMANS BETTER THAN ANIMALS?  Discuss and then write down your answer Sentence starter: Yes/No, humans are/are not better than animals because…….. I also believe that……. Humans and animals are the same/different for example….. Include the words human intelligence and animal instinct

4 WHAT ARE ANIMALS FOR?  Debate

5 SUB-HEADING: HOW ARE ANIMALS USED BY HUMANS?  List at least 10 ways animals are used by humans  E.g. in sports such as dog racing, blind dogs etc.  To get a higher grade: Which do you believe are acceptable and which not? Explain next to your list with a coloured pen

6 ANIMALS DO HAVE RIGHTS: CREATE A MIND MAP USING THE INFORMATION BELOW  The term was first used in 1892  Hundreds of organisations now protect animals e.g. Animal Aid, RSPCA, Animal Equality. They believe they deserve to live how they were made to live  British Law protects animals e.g. some animals are not allowed as pets (dangerous dogs, rare birds).  Foxhunting and dog fighting are illegal in the UK  There are strict rules about exporting animals and transporting them for slaughter To get a higher grade: Research an Animal Rights organisation and how they protest to protect animals. Add to your mind map.

7 HOMEWORK  Research the works of one of the following organisations: Animal Aid Animal Equality RSPCA Grade A/A*: Analyse their work with an explanation and detail of examples of the things that they do Grade B: A detailed explanation of their work Grade C: Explain what they do to protect animal rights

8 PROJECT FEEDBACK  Stick in assessments, grade sheets and animal rights projects  SSW  Please use the purple pen to complete the w activity  If you do not have work back, complete task 5 using the purple pen and text books in your exercise books
