What will we be learning X- and y-intercepts of lines Slope Graphing lines  Slope-intercept form  y = mx + b  Standard forms  Ax + By = C  Point slope form  (y – y 1 ) = m(x - x 1 ) Writing equations of lines  Slope-intercept form  y = mx + b  Standard forms  Ax + By = C  Point slope form  (y – y 1 ) = m(x - x 1 ) Parallel and perpendicular lines

FYI… This is the foundation for upper level math courses such as Geometry, Algebra II, Pre- Calculus, Calculus ACT LOVES THIS STUFF!!!

Announcements 1. I will be collecting and grading most homeworks 2. To do well on the quizzes, tests, and final, you need to not only be able to use the formulas, but truly understand and apply the concepts 3. You can expect: 1. 1-2 quizzes/week 1. Homework or specific problems from hw 2. WUs 3. Exit slip 2. Lots of practice problems in class 3. Many WU practice problems 4. Many exit slip practice problems 4. Vocabulary note cards are due every Friday

All PPT and homeworks are on the Infinity website Office Hours: Every Tuesday and Thursday in the Library

Complete Get Ready for Chapter 4 ODDS (back of agenda)

SWBAT… find x and y intercepts Agenda 1. Warm-Up (10 min) 2. Review “Get Ready for Chapter 4” (20 min) 3. Notes on x and y intercepts with practice problems (20 min) Warm-Up: 1. Cut one piece of graph paper into 8 equal squares (we will be using these throughout the week) 2. Graph y = 2x + 1 using a table of values (graph on your square and glue in your notebook) Get Ready for Ch 4 (back of agenda) Tuesday, 1/5/10

Answers to Review Handout “Get Ready for Chapter 4” 1. 13 2. 18 3. 14 4. 96 5. $282.50 6. y = 5 – x 7. x = 3 + 2y 8. y = x + 5 9. x = 3 + 3/4y 10. W = P/2 – l 11. (4, 2) 12. (0, 3) 13. (2, -4) 14. (0, 0) 15. (-3, -3) 16. (-5, 2)

Graphing linear equations To graph a linear equation you can use: 1.) Table of values (last project and WU) 2.) Intercepts (today) 3.) Slope intercept form (y = mx + b) (next week)

What does it mean to INTERCEPT a pass in football? The path of the defender crosses the path of the thrown football.

x and y-intercepts The x-intercept of a line is the point at which the line crosses the x axis. ( i.e. where the y value equals 0 ) x-intercept = ( x, 0 ) The y-intercept of a line is the point at which the line crosses the y axis. ( i.e. where the x value equals 0 ) y-intercept = ( 0, y )

WU Example: y = 2x + 1 x-int. Let y = 0 y = 2x + 1 0 = 2x + 1 -1 = 2x x = -1/2; (-1/2, 0) y-int. Let x = 0 y = 2x + 1 y = 2(0) + 1 y = 1; (0, 1)

y = 2x + 1 Graph y = 2x + 1 using x- and y- intercepts. x-int : (- 1/2, 0) y-int: (0, 1) Note: You are plotting TWO different points on the same graph.

x-intercept: Plug in 0 for y. -3x + 5(0) = 9 -3x = 9 x = -3; (-3, 0) y-intercept: Plug in 0 for x. -3(0) + 5y = 9 5y = 9 y = ; (0, ) Ex2: Graph -3x + 5y = 9 using x- and y-intercepts

SWBAT… find x and y intercepts Agenda 1. Warm-Up (10 min) 2. Review hw (front) (20 min) 3. Real-life examples of x- and y-intercepts (20 min) Warm-Up: 1. Write hw in planner 2. Place all “Get Ready for Ch 4” sheets in a pile on your desk (20 pts) 3. Graph 2x – 7y = 14 using x- and y-intercepts Study for tomorrow’s quiz on intercepts 6 th Period Thursday, 1/7/10

x-intercept: Plug in 0 for y. 2x – 7(0) = 14 2x = 14 x = 7; (7, 0) y-intercept: Plug in 0 for x. 2(0) – 7y = 14 -7y = 14 y = -2; (0, -2) Graph 2x – 7y = 14 using x- and y-intercepts HW Prob #2

Ex: What are the x- and y-intercepts? The x-intercept is where the graph crosses the x-axis. The y-coordinate is always 0. The y-intercept is where the graph crosses the y-axis. The x-coordinate is always 0. (2, 0) (0, 6)

Ex: What is the x-intercept of 3x – 4y = 24? 1. (-6, 0) 2. (8, 0) 3. (0, -4) 4. (8, -6)

Ex: What is the y-intercept of -x + 2y = 8? 1. (-1, 0) 2. (-8, 0) 3. (0, 2) 4. (0, 4)

SWBAT… find x and y intercepts Agenda 1. Warm-Up (10 min) 2. Review hw (front) (20 min) 3. Real-life examples of x- and y-intercepts (20 min) Warm-Up: 1. Write hw in planner 2. Write a 3-4 sentence summary on how to graph a line using x- and y-intercepts. BE SPECIFIC! How would you explain what we learned to someone who wasn’t here? Study for tomorrow’s quiz on intercepts Thursday, 1/7/10

Directions: On your big piece of graph paper, graph your given line using x- and y-intercepts. One person should show the work for the x-intercept, the other person should show the work for the y-intercept. I will pick random groups to present their graphs.

SWBAT… find x and y intercepts Agenda 1. Warm-Up (5 min) 2. Review hw – Problems #8, 9 (10 min) 3. Real-life examples of x- and y-intercepts (20 min) 4. Quiz on x- and y-intercepts (10 min) Warm-Up: Find the x- and y-intercepts: Friday, 1/8/10 Time (h)Distance (mi) 0248 1186 2124 362 40

Graph each equation using x- and y-intercepts: 1. y = 2. Extra Credit: What is the x-intercept of y = 3. (Hint: graph the line)
